Digimap – Data Download 19 November 2014 Guy McGarva, EDINA Geo User Support Vivienne Mayo, EDINA User Support

Data Download Categories of data How to use Issues for users: Unzipping Formats Tile sizes Copyright and Resources Content

Digimap OS Collection Roam – view, annotate, print OS maps at a range of fixed scales Data Download – download OS mapping data for use in GIS/CAD

Roam Search, scale bar, overlays, annotate, measure, change basemap Save & open maps, Print, Map Content, Map Info.

Data Download All available OS map data in Data Download Download several map products in one order 5 categories of map data 3 steps to order map data

Data Download Click + or on category name to open and see available map data products: OS MasterMap – most detailed topographic mapping of GB, transport network map data Background Mapping – raster maps at range of scales, all in TIFF format Land and Height data – contours and Digital Terrain Models Vector data – range of scales and formats Boundary and Location data – administrative boundaries, postcode data, gazetteers

Available datasets and dates k/webhelp/os/data_infor mation/os_data_issues/o s_update_dates.htm# k/webhelp/os/data_infor mation/os_data_issues/o s_update_dates.htm#

1. OS MasterMap Vector map product, most detailed mapping available of GB. Topography layer – GML, DWG and File Geodatabase formats. Building Heights data added in CSV or KML format. Integrated Transport Network layer – GML format only. Change Only updates available.

2. Backdrop mapping 9 products available. Raster maps – useful as backdrop. TIFF image format. Largest scale at top, 1:1000. MiniScale smallest scale – 1: Click Info for information box.

2. Backdrop mapping Information box displays: – Scale, version, format availability, data allowance, tile size and Terms of use. – Click Show Grid to display the tiles on map.

3. Land and Height data OS Terrain 50 most up to date. OS Terrain 5 coming soon, part of new licence agreement. Will replace PROFILE. DTM? Digital Terrain Model, useful for 3D modelling of terrain. Formats vary between products.

4. Vector Data Largest scale - VectorMap Local 1: Smallest scale - Strategi, 1: Formats vary between products, e.g.: – Vector Map Local – GML, DWG, SHP – Strategi – SHP, DXF, TAB, NTF, MIFMID Tile sizes: – Strategi, Meridian 2 National – get all of GB – Vector Map District - 100x100km tiles

5. Boundary and Location Data Boundary-Line - administrative boundaries e.g. counties, unitary authorities, electoral areas. Shape format. Code-Point – coordinates for postcodes, boundaries for postcodes. CSV, NTF (Code-Point). Shape, MIF- MID (Code-Point Polygons). OS Locator – gazetteer of road names. CSV. 1:50000 Scale Gazetteer, place name database, 260,000 entries. CSV. Outlines - National Grid square outlines, GB National outlines – Shape, MIFMID, DXF.

Using Data Download 3 step process: 1.Select area 2.Choose maps 3.Add to basket – Options to change format, version and layers

Basket options Select version, format and layers in the basket. Options vary between map data products.

Some issues for Digimap users Unzipping – all data is provided in a zip archive file. Sometimes data is zipped within the zip archive! Formats – getting the right format Tile sizes - map data products are provided in different tile sizes

Unzip standard Digimap zip files You will download 1 zip archive file for each order you place in Data Download Use the standard Windows unzip facility to unzip and extract the file contents to a location on your computer

Unzip standard Digimap zip files Zip archive file contents: Sub-folder for each map product in your order Citations and contents text documents at top level

Sub-folder contents Within each sub-folder, data files and conditions of use text file. Data from Digimap OS is covered by the Digimap licence OR the OS OpenData licence. So each data folder has a conditions document that specifies which conditions apply. NOTE: for some products, the map data will be zipped in the sub-folder. Image of Vector Map District data. Check before you try to add it to your software!

Data formats FormatCompatibility DXF, DWGDrawing Exchange, or Drawing, format, AutoCAD File GeodatabaseArcGIS, QGIS MIF/MIDMapInfo format NTFNational Transfer format, non-proprietary. Older format, developed in 1990s. GMLGeography Markup Language, non-proprietary SHPShape file, ArcGIS format TIFFTIFF image format, used for background mapping products.

Formats and conversion guidance

TIFF files Raster data (backdrop mapping) all supplied in TIFF image format, with a TFW file TIFF World Files contains location, scale and rotation of TIFF map. Keep in same folder as TIFF files!

Shape files ArcGIS format, can be used in other software too. Remember to keep all constituent parts together - SHP, DBF, SHX, PRJ. Image of folder containing VectorMap Local shape files

Tile sizes Map data from Digimap is typically provided in tiles that have been referenced to the British National Grid - exceptions are OS MasterMap vector data, gazetteers, products provided with national coverage such as Boundary-Line. Data from Digimap is in a range of sizes, from 1 x 1 km tiles to 100 x 100 km tiles. Typically the more detailed the map data, the smaller the tile size, e.g.: ProductTile size 1:50000 raster20 x 20 km 1: raster10 x 10km Vector Map Local 1: x 5km Vector Map District 1: x 100 km

Merging tiles Where tiles are provided in smaller sizes, e.g. 5 x 5 km, possible to merge them into one Image: OS Terrain contours in ArcMap, for area of South East England

Clipping tiles Where tiles are provided in large sizes e.g. 100 x 100 km, possible to clip them to smaller area Image: Vector Map District clipped to smaller area in ArcMap
