1 Digimap – Data Download
Ordnance Survey Collection 11 November 2015 Ian Holmes, EDINA Geo User Support

2 Content Data Download Issues and tips: Overview of available map data
Ordering map data with the data download services Contents of your download file Support resources on using data in GIS/CAD Issues and tips: Using Roam to identify map products Unzipping Formats Tile sizes

3 Overview of available map data
Ordnance Survey Collection Almost all OS products including (Open and Licensed Data) Including: MasterMap Topography Layer (most detailed GB mapping available) Terrain 50 and Terrain 5 (DTM and contour datasets) 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale rasters (outdoor leisure maps) Code-Point with Polygons – postcode boundaries Building Height Attribute – heighted building dataset (alpha release)

4 Digimap OS Collection Roam: view, annotate, print maps at a range of fixed scales Data Download: download mapping data for use in GIS/CAD

5 Data Download Download several map products in one order
Map data grouped in to categories 3 steps to order map data: Select Area Select Data Add to Basket

6 Data Download Categories
Click + or on category name to open and see available map data products: OS MasterMap – most detailed topographic mapping of GB, transport network, building heights, important sites Background Mapping – raster maps at range of scales, all in TIFF format Land and Height Data – contours and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) Vector Data – range of scales and formats Boundary and Location Data – administrative boundaries, postcode data, gazetteers, Points of Interest Withdrawn Datasets – datasets no longer updated by Ordnance Survey but still available

7 1. OS MasterMap Vector map product(s), most detailed mapping available of GB: Integrated Transport Network layers – GML format only. Sites Layer – polygon dataset of important sites e.g. schools, health centres etc. Topography layer – most detailed mapping: GML, DWG and File Geodatabase formats. Building Heights data added in CSV or KML format. Scotland’s Greenspace Map – based on Topography Layer OS MasterMap Topography Layer OS MasterMap Topography Layer: Building Height Attribute

8 2. Backdrop Mapping Raster map products – useful as backdrop
10 products available All in TIFF image format Largest scale at top, 1:1000 GB Overview smallest scale – 1: 1:25,000 Colour Raster 1:50,000 Colour Raster

9 3. Land and Height data OS Terrain 5 and Terrain 50 most up to date
Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) useful for 3D modelling of terrain Formats vary between products; PANORAMA available in native CAD formats PROFILE still available in ‘Withdrawn Datasets’ section, which is also available in CAD formats OS Terrain 50 (contours)

10 4. Vector Data Largest scale - VectorMap Local 1:10000.
Smallest scale - Strategi, 1:250000 Formats vary between products, e.g.: Vector Map Local – GML, DWG, SHP Strategi – SHP, DXF, TAB, NTF, MIFMID Tile sizes: Strategi, Meridian 2 National – get all of GB Vector Map District x100km tiles

11 5. Boundary and Location Data
Points of Interest – point locations of services and facilities Boundary-Line – administrative boundaries e.g. counties, unitary authorities, electoral areas Code-Point – postcode centroid coordinates and polygons (Code-Point with Polygons) OS Locator – gazetteer of road names. CSV. OS Open Names, 1:50,000 Scale Gazetteer – place name databases Grid Squares and Outlines - National Grid square and outlines for GB

12 6. Withdrawn Datasets Datasets no longer updated by Ordnance Survey but still available through Digimap

13 Using Data Download 3 step process: Select area Choose data
Add to basket Options to change format, version and layers It’s straightforward to use Data Download – ordering map data involves 3 steps: Select your area on the map – there are 4 methods for selection. The shaded orange area you see here is our selected area. Select the map data that you wish to download. You can open any category of map data by clicking on the name. Then it’s a matter of ticking the box next to any map data you wish to download. You can download as many as you like in an order, provided you do not exceed the allowances. There is an allowance for each map data product – in order that our servers can process orders as quickly as possible. Third step is to add to basket. Once you click the add to basket button, your basket pops up on screen. You can then select from different formats, date versions and map layers, where available. Options will different depending on map product.

14 Product Information and availability grids
Scale, version, format availability, data allowance, tile size and Terms of use Click Show Overlay to display availability grid on map Click More Info to view help page specific to the product Availability Grids: Display availability and tile boundaries of each product

15 Basket options Dataset options:
Version – dataset version as released by Ordnance Survey Format – note different datasets available in different formats Theme – some datasets are available in different styles e.g. full colour and line drawing Layers – use this to download some features from the full dataset, e.g. just building features from OS MasterMap Topography Layer

16 Data formats Format Compatibility DXF, DWG CAD drawing formats
File Geodatabase ArcGIS, QGIS MIF/MID MapInfo format NTF National Transfer format, non-proprietary. Older format, developed in 1990s. GML Geography Markup Language, non-proprietary SHP Shape file, ArcGIS format but can be read by most GIS applications including AutoCAD Map 3D TIFF TIFF image format, used for background mapping products

17 Email notifications 1st email acknowledges receipt of order
2nd when data is ready to download Length of time to extract data depends on extents and data format selected Data available to download for 3 days, but can re-order at any point using ‘My Previous Downloads’ button

18 Unzip standard Digimap zip files
You will download 1 zip archive file for each order you place in Data Download Use the standard Windows unzip facility to unzip and extract the file contents to a location on your computer

19 Unzip standard Digimap zip files
Zip archive file contents: Sub-folder for each map product in your order Citations and contents text documents at top level

20 Sub-folder contents Within each sub-folder, data files and conditions of use text file. Data from Digimap OS is covered by the Digimap licence OR the OS OpenData licence. So each data folder has a conditions document that specifies which conditions apply. NOTE: for some products, the map data will be zipped in the sub-folder. Image of Vector Map District data. Check before you try to add it to your software!

24 List of available formats

25 Tile sizes Map data from Digimap is typically provided in tiles that have been referenced to the British National Grid - exceptions are OS MasterMap vector data, gazetteers, products provided with national coverage such as Boundary-Line. Data from Digimap is in a range of sizes, from 1 x 1 km tiles to 100 x 100 km tiles. Typically the more detailed the map data, the smaller the tile size, e.g.: Product Tile size 1:50000 raster 20 x 20 km 1: raster 10 x 10km Vector Map Local 1:10000 5 x 5km Vector Map District 1:50000 100 x 100 km Last Amended: 3 September 2001

26 Merging tiles Where tiles are provided in smaller sizes, e.g. 5 x 5 km, possible to merge them into one Image: OS Terrain contours in ArcMap, for area of South East England

27 Clipping tiles Where tiles are provided in large sizes e.g. 100 x 100 km, possible to clip them to smaller area Image: Vector Map District clipped to smaller area in ArcMap

28 TIFF files Raster data (backdrop mapping) all supplied in TIFF image format, with a TFW file TIFF World Files contains location, scale and rotation of TIFF map. Keep in same folder as TIFF files!

29 Shape files ArcGIS format, can be used in other software too.
Remember to keep all constituent parts together - SHP, DBF, SHX, PRJ. Image of folder containing VectorMap Local shape files
