1 Digimap Carto is an advanced version of classic but with many more options. You need to return to the Digimap home page and this time select the “Digimap Carto” icon. A window appears with a picture containing a box, a click on this reveals the words “Start Carto” a further click starts the loading of Carto. This may take a little while, especially at busy internet times, so be patient. There is also an important note about pop up blockers that needs to be read to enable you to print from Carto.

4 Carto opens up with a default map, when you first use Carto this will show Edinburgh castle. Edina hold all the Digimap data on servers at Edinburgh University, so they use a local view as the default screen. You can set your own map as the default by placing it in the “home map” box under the “options” fly out tab.. The next screen shows Digimap Carto with a user default map, in this case the main Highfield site. The scale of 1:2298 has been selected to enable most of the main University site to fit within the screen boundary. The pop out boxes on the left hand side are where we set up the various map options. You can locate the area to be mapped by using the pop out “Search” tab.

7 Carto uses vector and raster typographic data sets, vector enables you to edit the content of your map but raster is an total map content capture. The different data sets available are: 1.MasterMap, scale range 1:300 to 1:6,500 2.Code Point with Polygons (post code area) 3.Land Form Profile (contour lines & spot heights) 4.1:10,000 raster (non editable for content) scale range1:1,000 to 1:10,000 5. 1:25,000 raster (non editable for content) scale range 1:6,000 to 1:26,500 6. 1:50,000 raster (non editable for content) scale range 1:20,500 to1:50,500 7. Meridian 2 and Panorama, scale range 1:14,000 to 1:91,000 8.Strategi, scale range 1:68,000 to 1:935,000 When the required scale is selected Digimap will apply the relevant data to your map. This is dependent on the scale ratio requested in the box on the top bar.

24 The editable layers are obtained by: 1.Selecting the “Map Content” fly out tab. 2. Clicking on the symbol to the left of the data title in the left hand box. This will drop down a sub menu of editable layers. 3. Find the type of data you are looking for and either include (tick in box) or exclude (remove tick in box). 4. After selections are made click the “Redraw Map” tab at the top of the column, when ever changes are made you must request Digimap to redraw the map. The layers you can select will be shown in black text, if it’s grey that item is not selectable at your chosen scale.

28 When you are satisfied with the content of the map the next step is to save it to your computer, click “save image” at the top right hand corner of your screen. A dialog box will appear, state a download path and select file type (png, gif or jpg) and save a copy. For a better quality image and the ability to edit the map content further click “Print” and follow the steps in the dialog box. The first step will be to name your map and select a scale bar and grid. It is best practice to always include a scale, but a grid (National Grid lines) are considered more of an option.

29 Next set parameters for your map by adjusting your paper size (if required). The dialog box will now show the coverage of your map, you can adjust this by either changing the scale or map extent to fit the new page size. Click the “Generate Print File” button and a new window “EPS Print File Generation” will open, click the blue “Save your map” text and open or save the eps file. To save the file, select a path and file name in the new dialog box and click the save button, when finished close the new windows to return to your map. You can also save your map via the “Bookmark your current map” option in the “Bookmark” fly out. This allows you to extract the map at a later date for further editing should you wish to do so.

36 The downloaded map can now be placed into CoralDRAW or other suitable software. Here it can be edited for line colour changes, text and title additions, resizing, and any other amendments you wish to make. If you simply wish to print out your map without editing, the file can be opened into other EPS capable software such as GSview and printed. The choice of colour or black/white output is of course dependant on your printer. The two versions shown so far, allow us to edit the map content on screen, then either print a copy directly or download a file for printing at a later date. We shall now look at another form of map creation, Digimap Download.
