Parents’ Information Meeting KS2 SATS 2015 Wednesday 25 th March 2015 Welcome and please take some time to look at a sample of the test papers that are on the tables in your child’s folder.

SATs Week May 11 th –May 15 th

What are SATs? Statutory assessment tests A legal requirement Most 11 year olds in England sit the tests They now measure a child’s attainment in English and Mathematics at the end of key stage 2.

Explanation of Levels (The last year of levels!) Children develop at different levels but at the end of Year 6 the National Curriculum guidelines are as follows; Level 3c, b, a : Below the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 4c, b, a The nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 5c, b, a Above the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 6- key stage 3 expectation REMEMBER – ALL children are different.

What will be tested? Maths 1.Mental Maths ( 20questions - 5, 10 and 15 second questions) 2.Maths Papers A (45 minutes – using and applying maths) 3.Maths Paper B* (45 minutes – using and applying maths) English 4.Reading – 1 hour to read and answer questions based around 3 different texts 5.Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar – 45 minutes 6.Spelling – 20 sentences with a word missing Writing – No longer a ‘one off’ test within the SATs week. This is continuously assessed throughout the year.

The Typical SATs Week Timetable Monday 11 th May 2014 Tuesday 12 th May 2014 Wednesday 13 th May 2014 Thursday 14 th May 2014 Friday 15 th May 2014 Reading Test 1 hour SPaG/ EGPS test Spelling, punctuation and grammar/ English grammar, punctuation and spelling (45 mins) Spelling test (15-20 mins) Mental Maths Test 20 minutes Maths Test Paper 1 45 minutes Maths Test Paper 2 45 minutes Level 6 Reading Level 6 SPaG 30 mins plus spelling test – 15 mins Level 6 Maths 1 Level 6 Maths 2 Both – 30 minutes Level 6 – Only children who are performing well above Level 5 selected children will sit the Level 6 papers. This will be a small number within our school and a small % nationally.

Maths Tests There are three tests: The mental test (20% - 20 marks) Paper A -no calculator allowed (40% - 40 marks) Paper B – no calculator allowed (40%) Children are allowed a pencil, ruler, tracing paper, protractor and mirror for Papers A & B

Reading Test 1 hour test to read through 3 texts The texts are not linked Texts are progressively more difficult Questions shorter, closed response items shorter, open response items longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding.

Useful Websites This is an excellent site, providing revision help for KS2, KS3, KS 4 and KS5. This covers all subjects through activities and tests. A wide range of KS2 SATs questions, from both past papers and their own team of teachers. Revision pages at Woodlands Junior School. These revision pages support the work they do at Woodlands Junior School. They have been put together for their students to help them with their revision. Included are some sample questions taken from past Key Stage 2 SATs papers, as well as a whole host of interactive tests/quizzes. This links to lots of other websites which have games and activities on specific subjects Over 10 years of past SAT papers for you to use (Please do not use papers after and including 2010 as these will be used in school during revision lessons) English and Maths revision activities and games.
