2 Gosforth East Middle School Key Stage 2 SATs 2016

3 Tonight we will provide: Information about the format of tests Examples of expectations Suggestions of how to help your child to prepare for SATs Examples of past papers Examples of revision guides Answers to any questions you may have

4 Background There have been Key Stage 2 SATs since 1995 Children will complete a range of tests in Numeracy and Literacy High schools are also interested in the results The children’s progress is calculated from these SATs scores

5 New for 2016 The new national curriculum will be assessed for the first time Tests will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead. There will be one set of tests for each subject. They will include a small number of questions designed to assess the most able pupils, so separate tests are no longer required

6 New for 2016 An arithmetic test now replaces the mental mathematics test The biennial science sampling test will take place in June 2016. These tests will be administered in schools, by external administrators. We will find out if we are involved early in the Spring term.

7 Results will no longer be published as a level, pupils will receive a scaled score (this will be based on their raw score and translated to a scaled score using a conversion table) Pupils achieving a scaled score of 100 or more have met the expected standard, those below 100 are still working towards the expected standard and have not met it The Results

8 Achievement Most children should achieve the expected standard Some children may not meet the expected standard. This does not mean they have ‘failed’. For some children completing the test is a tremendous achievement Children’s progress will be calculated from their achievement at Key Stage 1 Some children are working at a higher standard and will exceed the expected standard

9 You will receive at the end of Year 6... Teacher assessment for English and Maths SAT outcome for English GPS, Reading and Maths (including a raw score, a standardised score and whether your child met the expected standard or not)...As well as the normal end of year report The Results

10 The Tests SATs week begins on Monday 9th May 2016 There are two areas being tested in the SATs: Numeracy and Literacy, each with two or three papers of varying length We will work closely with pupils to ensure they are familiar with the different formats

11 Timetable Monday 9 MayEnglish reading test Tuesday 10 May English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Wednesday 11 May Mathematics, Paper 1, arithmetic test. Mathematics, Paper 2, reasoning. Thursday 12 MayMathematics Paper 3, reasoning.

12 Access Arrangements Provision will be made to enable all children to achieve as highly as possible - Readers - Extra time - Prompt - Amanuensis (scribe) - ‘Brain breaks’ Applications for these will be made very soon and are based on the children’s prior attainment, needs and current provision

13 Why are SATs so important? Like any other formal examination process Give you information about where your child is (academically). National test Gives you a comparison to see how much they have progressed throughout their time at First and Middle School Informs high schools of academic ability/settings

14 How Can You Help? Praise and encourage your child, leading up to and during SATs week and when the results come out Your child will need to be in school for each test Early nights. Your child should go to bed early prior to SATs – including Friday and Saturday. Research has shown that sleep can make a difference of 4 years in mental age Make sure they have a good breakfast and a snack for break time may also help. Water during the test also helps. Quiet place for children to study

15 As a school we firmly believe that children should continue to enjoy the broadest possible curriculum in the run up to SATs Pupil progress and achievement can be measured by much more than just SATs results Whilst we will prepare pupils, we do not want to put undue pressure upon them We will now head to your child’s classroom where their form teacher will go through the English and Maths papers in more detail
