Constraints in Pulse Production Most of Pulses are grown in low fertility, problematic soils. More than 87 % of the area under Pulses in rainfed . Drought & Heat stress may reduced seed yields by 50%. Poor drainage/ Water logging during the rainy season causes heavy losses . Farmers treat Pulses as secondary crops. As a result, Pulses continue to the grown on poor soils with low inputs. Lack of policy support and post harvest innovations related to pulse crops. Poor Availability of quality seed of improved varieties and other inputs.

Interventions Kharif Pulses occupy about 20% of Total Pulse Production. Krishi Mahotsav an intensive extension programme is to be started in the month of MAY 2015 . A campaign regarding Kharif Pulse Production would be incorporated with Krishi Mahotsav . 15000 Demonstrations on intercropping with Kharif Pulses is proposed under NFSM Pulses.

Summer Pulses The area under third crop (summer) in year 2011-12 was 22000 ha which has increased to 3 lakh ha in year 2014-15. This expansion is achieved mainly in moong. In sugarcane growing areas farmers adopted Sugarcane: Moong intercropping instead of sole crop. They are advised to use water saving devices & distributed the same under NFSM.

SUMMER MUNG Dist. Harda

Success Story – Summer Moong District-Harda Name – Krishna Kumar Muraliya Village - Khidki District - Harda Area - 2.4 ha Varity - Hum -12 Row to Row Distance - 30 cm Plant to Plant Distance - 5 cm Production -17.25 q/ha Cost of Cultivation - Rs. 32750/ha Total Income - Rs. 89700/ha Net Income - Rs. 56950/ha

Major intercropping systems Pigeonpea + Soybean (2:4/2:1) Pigeonpea + Moong (2:1) Sorghum + Pigeonpea (2:2) Urd + Pigeonpea (2:1) Cotton + Pigeonpea (4:2) Moong + Maize (2:1) Sorghum + Moong/Urd (1:2) Pigeonpea + Soybean (6:1)

INTER CROPPING MOONG WITH SUGARCANE

Future Strategies In hilly areas like Dindori, Sidhi, Shahdol upland paddy is cultivated having very low productivity. These areas can be replaced with pulses. Sole crop of cereals and oil seeds are grown, pulses can very well be intercropped. In rice growing areas bunds can be utilized for cultivation of medium duration varieties of pigeonpea. Implementation for adoption of suitable agronomic practices. ex. Pigeonpea yet sown with very high seed rate with narrow spacing in many areas. Supplementation of sulfur @ 20kg/ha through gypsum ones in two years is to be promoted in sulfur deficit areas. Promotion of ridge planting in black cotton soil region.
