1 National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2015
Promotion of Pulses through intercropping in Kharif 2015 Venue : National Agriculture Science Centre, Pusa complex, ICAR, New Delhi. Date : 7th & 8th April 2015

2 Pulses 25.06 lakh ha. Redgram (Tur) :8.24 lakh ha.
Bengalgram 9.46lakh ha. Horse Gram-1.63 lakh ha Pulses lakh ha. Greengram 3.20 lakh ha. Cowpea 0.81lakh ha. Urad 1.02lakh ha. Ref. Year 2

3 MAJOR PULSE GROWING DISTRICTS OF KARNATAKA
Pigeon pea, Chickpea, Moong Chickpea, Moong Horse gram, Cowpea, Moong Avare , Cowpea

4 Area, production and productivity under Pulses from 2006-07 to 2014-15
Year Area (Lakh ha.) Production (Lakh tons) Productivity (Kg/ha) 23.16 8.39 381 23.86 12.33 544 20.88 9.75 492 24.80 11.02 468 27.91 15.33 578 23.00 10.30 472 22.68 13.62 632 25.06 17.73 745 (Advance estimates) 24.32 15.24 626

5 FUTURE THRUST Productivity of pulses has stagnated over a long period at kgs./ha. in rainfed areas. There is a need to increase the productivity to 1000kgs /ha. in rainfed areas and 2000 kgs/ha. under protective irrigation for achieving self sufficiency in pulse production.

6 EXPECTED OUTCOME OF THE INTERVENTIONS
Proposed interventions in research and extension strategies will lead to expansion of area under pulses from the present level of 24 lakh ha to 30 lakh ha Increase the production from the present level of 15.7 lakh tons to 20.0 lakh tons The present productivity level of 560 kg/ha is expected to be enhanced to 1000kg/ha Increase in pulse area will result in improving the soil health through atmospheric nitrogen fixation and increase organic matter content Pulses, being the source of vegetable protein, the per capita availability will increase from 60g/head to 80g/head

7 Intercropping in pulses during Kharif season
The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of the resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop. Advantages of intercropping Gives higher income than sole crop per unit area Acts as an insurance against failure of crops in abnormal year Intercrops maintain soil fertility as the nutrient uptake is made from both layers Reduces soil runoff and helps in weed control Judicious use of resources such as land, labour, inputs etc Intercrops provide shade and support to the main crop Reduces the incidence of pest and diseases Encourages biodiversity by providing a habitat for a variety of insects and soil organisms that would not be present in a single crop environment.

9 Tur + Greengram Tur + Bajra

10 Tur + Sesamum Tur + Sunflower

11 INTERCROPPING OF RED GRAM WITH GROUNDNUT
INTERCROPPING OF RED GRAM WITH CHILLI 11

12 PAIRED ROW PLANTING – PIGEON PEA AND GROUND NUT IN TUMKUR DIST

13 Redgram intercrop with soyabean Kamathana village, Bidar taluka.

14 Inter cropping of Red gram with Paddy

15 Bund Cropping of Pigeon pea in Paddy fields

16 OTHER OPTIONS FOR ENHANCEMENT OF AREA UNDER PULSES
Promoting pulse cultivation in rice fallows by utilising residual moisture after harvest of kharif paddy crop. Promoting intercropping in wider spaced crops like sugarcane, cotton , redgram, maize. Utilising bund spaces in paddy and other crops.

17 THANK YOU
