11 Main crops of Rabi season
Wheat Gram, Lentil and Summer Moong Rapeseed & Mustard Rabi Maize and Jowar

12 Strategies for Rabi : Region specific crop planning–based on moisture availability Pre-positioning of Inputs: Seeds, bio-agents/Agro- chemicals, Fertilizers, Micro-nutrients, Soil amendments- Lime or Gypsum. Moisture Conservation & Timely sowing : Laser Land Leveller, Zero till Seed drill, Rotavator, Happy Seeder. Focus on Rice fallow area for sowing pulses and oilseeds. Promotion of Relay cropping / Intercropping: To enhance the production and profitability. Area specific application of Micronutrients – sulphur, Molybdenum, Zinc, Boron, etc.

13 REQUIREMENT & AVAILABILITY OF SEEDS for Rabi: 2016-17
Crop REQUIREMENT (Lakh quintal) AVAILABILITY (Lakh quintal) DEFICIT/ SURPLUS Wheat 117.5 136.5 19.02 Rabi Jowar 1.21 1.25 0.04 Chick pea (gram) 17.6 16.0 -1.6 Urd 1.08 1.03 0.05 Moong 0.67 0.93 0.26 Lentil 1.47 1.15 -0.32 R & M 1.75 1.74 0.01 Source: Seed Division, DAC, GOI.

14 REQUIREMENT & SALES OF FERTILIZERS for Rabi: 2016-17

15 Specific Issues Blast of Wheat
Yellow Rust & Karnal Bunt: Each state should have strategy to manage these diseases. Enforcement of Seed Certification Standards: Promotion seed production during off season to make up the deficiency

16 New Initiatives for Pulses under NFSM
150 Seed Hubs in Pulses in three years Enhancement of breeder seed production of Pulses at ICAR-IIPR and SAU,s Seed mini kits of pulses Subsidy for production of quality seed Pulses and oilseeds cluster demonstrations Bio fertilizer and bio pesticides Pulses and oilseeds cultivation in rice fallow areas under BGREI Promotion of summer moong

17 WE NEED TO PROMOTE PULSES & OILSEEDS IN RICE FALLOWS
Eastern States: Paddy Fallow – 8 million ha land West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka Options: Pulses: Lentil, lathyrus and chickpea Oil seeds: Mustard, safflower and linseed Identification of potential districts with rice fallows Promote timely sowing of pulses in residual moistures Availability of seeds of suitable varieties Use of natural resources: tanks/watersheds for life saving irrigation (PMKSY) Pooling of resources : NFSM, NMOOP, ATMA, RKVY and other schemes. Motivating large number of farmers in a village

18 THANK YOU With the appropriate strategy we will be able to
address the constraints and achieve the target THANK YOU
