MEDICAL TERMS RELATED TO THE EYE 1. Conjunctiva (n) means the delicate mucous membrane that covers the front of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. The combining form is conjunctiv/o. Conjunctival – adj.

2. Pupil (n) means central opening in the iris of the eye through which light enters the eye. Papillary – adj.

3. Iris (n) means the colored muscular layer that surrounds the pupil. The combining forms are ir/o and irid/o. Iridial or Iridic – adj. 4. Lens (n) is the flexible and curved structure located behind the iris and pupil. The combining form is phac/o. Lenticular – adj.

5. Retina (n) means the sensitive inner nerve layer of the eye. The combining form is retin/o. Retinal – adj. 6. Lacrimation (n) means the production of tears. The combining forms lacrim/o and dacry/o means tears or tear duct. Lacrimal – adj.

7. Glaucoma (n) means a condition in which loss of vision occurs usually because of abnormally high pressure in the eye.

8. Cataract (n) means clouding of the lens. 9. Diplopia (n) or double vision; means seeing two images of a single object. The prefix diplo- means 2. The suffix –opia means vision.

10. Trachoma (n) means a contagious disease of the conjunctiva and cornea. 11. Strabismus (n) means a condition where the 2 eyes focus on different points, also known as ”squint”.

12. Keratitis (n) means inflammation of the cornea. The combining form kerat/o means cornea.

13. Keratoplasty (n) a surgical repair of the cornea.

14. Myopia (n) a condition where a patient can see clearly the objects which are close, but not ones which are further away, also known as short-sightedness or near- sightedness. Myopic – adj.

15. Blepharitis (n) inflammation of the eyelids. The combining form blephar/o means eyelid. 16. Blepharoptosis (n) means the drooping of the upper eyelid. The suffix –ptosis means drooping or sagging.

17. aphakia (n) means absence of the lens of the eye. The prefix a- means no or without. The combining form phak/o means lens. The suffix – ia means abnormal condition.

18. Astigmatism (n) means a defect in the eye, which prevents the eye from focusing correctly. Astigmatic – adj.

19. Intraocular (adj) means referring to within the eye. The prefix intra- means within. The combining form ocul/o means eye. The suffix –ar means referring to. 20. to detach (v) means to separate one thing from another. The opposite is attach. {diabetes caused the retina to detach} Detachment – noun. Detached – adj.

21. Ophthalmology (n) study of the eye. The combining form ophthalm/o means eye. Other combining forms that mean eye are opt/i, opt/o and optic/o. Ophthalmic – adj. 22. Ophthalmologist (n) doctor who specializes in the eye and its diseases.

23. Optic(n) means referring to vision or sight. The combining form opt/o means vision or sight. 24. Optometrist (n) or optician a person who specializes in testing eyes and prescribing lenses. The suffix –metr- means measure. The suffix –ist means specialist.
