W HAT IS A COGNITIVE TUTOR ? A cognitive tutor is an intelligent tutoring system which develops a cognitive model of a student as he or she interacts with the program, providing problems and individualized instruction based on this model.

C ARNEGIE M ELLON & C OGNITIVE T UTORS Cognitive Tutor is also a name of a product produced by Carnegie Learning. Carnegie Learning uses blended approach, with a textbook and software (called Cognitive Tutor) for each subject.Cognitive Tutor The Cognitive Tutors are based on the ACT-R theory of learning, memory and performance. The Tutors were developed using an empirical testing process. There are over 50 publications which now validate the effectiveness of cognitive modeling.ACT-R The curriculum is based on how students think and allows students to work at their own pace

W HY U SE C OGNITIVE T UTORS ? It allows for personalization of the learning process. Has been successful in raising math test scores in both high school and middle school classrooms. Always available to students The software evaluates individual students math level step-by-step and presents the information tailored to the individual skill level of the students.
