This is a wonderful demonstration of assessment as learning because the student is reflecting on where she is at in the progress of writing. The student has a clear understanding of the mechanics of early writing and of the writing target. The student also knows about the necessary steps to improve her writing.

3. Assessment for Learning
This writing rubric provides a clear target for the teacher to measure students’ progress. It also informs the teacher of the necessary skills required for a student to improve his/her writing. The teacher evidently understands that learning happens at different paces therefore not all students will be at the same writing level at the same time. Knowing this, the teacher can tailor the one-on-one help to the focus on the most necessary skills that student needs to learn to improve his/her writing.

4. Assessment of Learning
This rubric will also be helpful to distinguish a student’s writing level for report cards and at the end of the year. It is a reliable and valid form of assessment that provides evidence for the teacher, student and parents of how well the student can write.
