1 The Chinese Academy of Sciences( CAS ) Founded on Nov.1,1949 Highest academic institution in natural sciences in China, Basic sciences/Life Sciences/Hi technology 108 research institutes in 28 cities across China 47,000 + researchers 33,000 + graduate students (50% doctoral)

NSL has the degree-granting of “Library Science” and “Information science” doctorate and master’s degree. NSL has 9 doctoral tutors and more than 40 master tutors. There are about 150 graduate students in NSL, including 55 for doctorate degree and 95 for master degree. 2 Roles

CAS E-resources Consortium Purchasing Union Catalogue Database ScienceChina AS one of the main departments participate in National Science and Technology Library (NSTL) projects. Book Circulation, Reference, User Training Document Delivery ( NSTL, CSDL and LCAS integrated), Inter-Library Loan (ILL) Information Retrieval, Citation Index Retrieval, Featured Subject Retrieval 10 work groups focusing on different research fields have been set up in this department, which consists of 38 domain-specific information analysts, for example, S&T policy and management, S&T planning and strategy, Interdisciplinary & important frontier S&T, Agriculture and biology Organizing and guides information construction of National Science Library : Organizing and guides the network and automation construction of National Science Library Organizing and guides the discovery service, transmission service and Q & A service Building National Science Digital Library construction and undertaking the implementation of digital library Establishing the channels between resources as well as services and users Developing digital reference work and information literacy education to promote scientists’ ability of information searching, accessing and using Developing subject competency information research, analyze subject trends, and find subject research hotspots Library and Information Service New Technology of Library and Information Service Chinese Journal of Library & Information Science Progress in Chemistry China Biotechnology Science Focus High-Technology & Industrialization E-Government Chinese Mathematical Abstracts Becoming a base of permanent preservation of important historical documents and materials and also the centre of the utilization of archives information

5 Programs Developments in NSL （ 1 ） Developments on digital knowledge resources system S&T Resources Integrated Registry System （ in building …..) Important Conferences Harvesting and Serving System （ in building …..) The Development of IR at institutes （ in building …..) …… Open Resources & Services Registry System To provide a mechanism for the users or the machines to find 、 acquire 、 integrate digital resource and services. OCSR is an open platform to provide the institutions or persons to register the digital resources and services. IR Grid and Integrated Services System NSL developed the IR platform to help the CAS institutes to manage their knowledge productions 。 And, in order to promote the sharing and using of these knowledge productions, NSL provides the service system for displaying and searching these data through the harvesting and integrating the data from IRs 。 Digital Literature Preservation Services System To preserve the digital information resources which have been licensed from the publishers. For example, NSL subscribed the Digital Resource Preservation Agreement with Springer at Sept It is the first time for Springer to subscribe the formal preservation agreement on current journals database.

（ 2 ） Developments on knowledge discovery and knowledge organization Visualization Technologies for Information Retrieval Demo System Using the visualization technologies is to make a information retrieval process into a knowledge exploration process and realize the data mining. Crossdomain Integrated Information Retrieval System In the data-centric research environment, more and more types of information resources from e-Science 、 e-Learning 、 e-Health 、 e-Culture 、 ARP are used by the researchers. This project is to support the users to easily find and access to the crossdomain information resources when they are searching in the literature services systems. Digital Services Mash-up System Crossdomain information retrieval system provides the access to one type of information, and, Mush-up system is to support many different types of information (literature information, scientific data, graph analysis information, etc..) to display on one webpage. Subject knowledge environment As a part of researching, SKE is a platform to serve for different research units. Basing on the ontology model-a kind of KOS, SKE integrates almost all types of information needed in researching.
