Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Equipment Teams must wear shirts that are the same color & shade. Goalkeepers must wear a different color shirt than either team. No metal cleats. No exposed metal or metal tips. Hard brimmed hats, bandanas, and casts are not allowed. Knee braces should be checked by a supervisor. JEWELRY MAY NOT BE WORN! May not be taped over Play without, or stand on the sidelines with it Only piece of jewelry allowed is a medical alert bracelet that must be taped down If necessary, find a supervisor if you have a question about jewelry This includes but is not limited to: necklaces, earrings, bracelets (including LIVESTRONGs), any other piercings

Players & Substitutes Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Regulation teams consist of 7 players (one is the keeper) and can play with a minimum of 5. If a player is disqualified (red card) he/she is NOT allowed a replacement. No player can enter the field without permission from the ref Substitutions can be made under the following conditions: Either teams’ goal kick Own teams’ throw-in or corner kick After a goal has been scored Between halves

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session The Game 20 minute halves with a running clock Halftime is about 2 minutes. Talk to your partner, talk about what you see, players, how the game is going. Teams change ends The clock will stop for injuries at the officials discretion The ref has the right to stop the clock at his/her discretion for players actions that violate the spirit of the game and for a delay in the game (ball well past the goal or out of play)

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Overtime rules In regular season, one 5 minute overtime played. If tied after overtime, game ends in a tie. First team to score wins. In playoffs, potential for two overtimes. In the first overtime, play the whole 5 minutes. If it remains tied, play a second overtime (again, the full 5 minutes). If the game is still tied, the game is decided by penalty kicks. Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by 5 or more goals with 5 minutes or less remaining the game will end.

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Start of Play Coin Toss Choice of ends of the field or the kickoff Coin toss prior to the first overtime period Kickoff After official’s whistle, game starts when player kicks ball into opponent’s half of the field Every player must be in his or her half of the field and the team receiving the kickoff must be at least 10 yards from the ball until it is kicked Kicker cannot kick the ball again after he or she has kicked off until it has been touched by another player The kicker must move the ball forward and the ball must travel the distance of its own circumference. If done incorrectly, it will be re-kicked. Once done correctly, the ball may be kicked in any direction

Ball in play Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session The ball is in play until it crosses the boundary line IN FULL in the air or on the ground. Half the ball out and half in is not out of play. Rebounds off an official or post in play are still live. If the ball becomes dead, put back into play by a throw in (on sidelines). If on the end lines: A goal kick if off the opposing team behind the goal they are shooting at A corner kick if off the offense of the goal they are defending After injury or other stop in play, indirect kick by team in possession If no team is in possession, drop ball at the point of interruption

Penalty Kicks Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Awarded if foul occurs in the penalty area How taken The penalty kick is taken from any place on the penalty kick spot Only those players on the field at the time of the penalty may take the penalty kick All players but the kicker and opposing goal keeper shall be within the field of play, but outside the penalty area and at least 10 yards from and behind the penalty spot

Penalty Kicks – Continued Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Penalty Kicks – Continued The kicker shall kick the ball forward in order to put it in play If not put into play properly, the kick will be retaken The kicker may not play the ball a second time until it has been touched or played by another player If the ball hits the goal posts or the crossbar and rebounds into play, the kicker still may not play the ball until it has been touched or played by another player Goalkeeper, who shall remain on the line facing the kicker between the goal posts, is permitted to move laterally but may not step or lunge forward until the ball is kicked

Penalty Kicks – Continued Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Penalty Kicks – Continued Infringements For an infringement by the defending team, kick shall be retaken if goal was not scored By the attacking team other than the player taking the kick, the kick shall be retaken if a goal has resulted If by attacking team and no goal has scored and the ball rebounds into play, an indirect free kick is awarded at the the spot of the infringement For an infringement by the player taking the kick before the ball is put into play, the player should be cautioned or ejected as appropriate, and the kick taken For an infringement by the player taking the kick after the ball is in play, the player shall be cautioned or ejected as appropriate; a goal may not be scored, and the game shall be restarted with a free kick as appropriate to the disciplinary actions

Penalty Kicks – Continued Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Penalty Kicks – Continued End of Time Variations If the ball touches the goalkeeper before passing between the posts and completely over the goal line when a penalty kick is being taken at or after the expiration of time, it does not nullify a goal If necessary, play shall be extended at the end of any period or half to allow a penalty kick to be completed If a penalty kick is taken after time expires, only the kicker and goalkeeper may play the ball

Corner Kicks Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session How taken Attacking team shall kick from within the quarter circle (imaginary for us) at the nearest corner flagpost (for us a cone). Some teams will move the cone – this is ok The defending team shall not approach within 10 yards of the ball until the ball is in play having traveled the distance of its own circumference Kicker shall not play the ball a second time after the ball is in play until it has been touched or played by another player This includes rebounds off the post Goals may be scored directly from a corner kick

Goal Kicks Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Ball is placed at any point within the goal area and kicked into the field of play beyond the penalty area, or is retaken The kicker may not play the ball a second time after it has passed beyond the penalty area until it has been touched or played by another player The goalkeeper shall not receive the ball into his or her hands in order that he or she may then kick it into play – must be placed on the ground and kicked from there Goals can be scored directly from a goal kick

Throw-in Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session How taken The thrower, at the moment of delivering the ball, shall face the field of play and part of each foot shall be either on the touch line or on the ground outside the touch line The thrower shall use both hands equally and deliver the ball from behind and over his or her head The throw-in shall be taken from the point where the ball crossed the line and can be thrown in any direction by a player of the team who did not touch it last If the ball is improperly thrown in, then the other team will get a throw-in opportunity Goals cannot be scored from a throw-in and goalies may not use their hands on a throw in from their own teammate

Goalkeeper Privileges Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Goalkeeper Privileges Outside the penalty area, the goalkeeper is just another player Handling – the goalkeeper may catch, carry, strike or propel the ball with the hands or arms Possession – the act of bouncing the ball in preparation for kicking it out to be played, tossing the ball into the air and recatching it, throwing the ball out to be played, pinning the ball to the ground with at least one hand, dropping the ball for the kick and parrying Parrying – (controlled deflection) shall count as possession or control Parrying during a save or attempted save when there is no clear attempt to control the ball, does not count as possession or control ***Goal keeper must not slide feet first!***

Goalkeeper Violations Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Goalkeeper Violations 6-second limit – the goalkeeper has 6 seconds to put the ball back into play once the goalkeeper takes control of the ball with the hands, regardless of the number of steps that might be taken during this time Repossession – after releasing the ball from possession, the keeper may touch or receive the ball with his or her hands only if the ball has been touched by a member of the opposing team inside or outside the penalty area or if the ball has been touched by a member of his or her own team, provided that player is outside the penalty area and the ball has not been deliberately kicked or thrown to the goalkeeper Throwing the ball into the air and allowing it to hit the ground is considered releasing the ball and the keeper may not retake possession unless the ball is touched or played by an opponent A goal keeper is not permitted to touch with his or her hands a ball the is deliberately kicked or thrown by a teammate

Scoring Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session A goal is scored when the entire ball has passed over the goal line (on the line is not the same as over the line) It is the position of the ball that counts The entire ball must cross the goal line prior to the expiration of time for the goal to count If the defenders deliberately stop or deflect the ball with their hands or arms to prevent a goal, it will count if it goes in A goal may be scored directly from a kickoff, goal kick, direct free kick, penalty kick and corner kick (and keeper’s throw)

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Indirect free kick offenses: a. Leaving the field of play without permission b. The kicker playing the ball next after a kickoff, free kick, penalty kick, goal kick or corner kick or the thrower playing the ball before another player plays the ball c. Kicking or attempting to kick the ball while it is in possession of the goalkeeper d. Obstruction e. Dangerous play

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Shootout – Penalty Kicks Any player on the roster that has not been ejected may kick Once the goalie is selected, they cannot be replaced, but for injury or if they are ejected A coin toss will determine which team shoots first/last Teams will alternate kicks Once the kicking order has been determined, it cannot be changed In Co-rec, teams must use 3/2 or 2/3 M/F All five kicks will take place at one goal If tied after the series of 5 kicks, the kicks shall be taken alternatively in the same order until a team has one more goal than the other in the same amount of chances

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Player Conduct Yellow Card Caution Any player who receives a yellow card shall be replaced and shall not re-enter the match until the next opportunity for a substitute occurs Two yellows on the same person in the same game = an ejection An ejected player may not be replaced Three yellows on the same team in the same game will fofeit that game Red Card Do not have to caution someone in order to give a red card Red card = ejection Two ejected players in on the same team in one game will forfeit the game

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Slide Tackles – Not your H.S. slide tackle! Slide tackles are illegal in Intramural Soccer Teams are told not to slide feet first in an effort to make a play on the ball or someone in possession of the ball Goalies must also not slide feet first towards a player This results in a yellow card and a penalty kick Second violation on the same player results in a red card Lunges are not slide tackles

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Jumping, Kicking, Spitting, Striking, Tripping Engaging in the above or attempting to do the same is dangerous and liable to cause injury In addition to penalizing with a direct kick, the referee shall caution or eject the player depending on the severity of the act Jumping at an opponent is different than jumping to play the ball

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Hand Balls A player shall be penalized if the player deliberately handles the ball; that is, carries, strikes or propels it with his or her hands or arms Result = Direct free kick Inadvertent touching (the ball touching the hands or arms) shall not be penalized even though the player or the player’s team gains an advantage by such inadvertent touching

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Dangerous or Violent Charging A player shall be penalized for charging an opponent in a violent or dangerous manner In addition to penalizing with a direct kick, the referee shall either caution player if it is a misconduct or eject the player depending on the severity of the act If not deemed violent or dangerous but still illegal, an indirect kick can be awarded A fair charge consists of a nudge or contact with the near shoulder, when both players are in an upright position, within playing distance of the ball, and have at least one foot on the ground and their arms held close to the body

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Fighting A player, coach or bench personnel shall be penalized if he or she deliberately strikes or attempts to strike another player, coach or bench personnel in a malicious manner or leaves the bench to participate in an altercation The acts may include, kicking, head-butting, hair pulling or an open-handed strike if done deliberately and in a malicious manner Two types of pushing infractions The kind where someone just wants the opposing player to give him distance This could be deemed misconduct and a yellow card could be issued The second is a shoving match that could lead to the fighting mentioned above Red cards should be given for this type of offense so as to prevent it becoming anything else

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Fouling the Goalkeeper The referee shall eject without previous caution any player who, with obvious intent, violently fouls the goalkeeper who is in possession of the ball in the keeper’s penalty area The awarded kick shall be a direct free kick Penalty kick in the situation described above!

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Obstruction A player shall be penalized for obstructing an opponent when not playing the ball; that is, running between an opponent and the ball or interposing his or her body as to form an obstacle to an opponent Result = Indirect free kick Tactical or legal obstruction occurs when a player places himself or herself between an opponent and the ball, keeping the ball within playing distance, and shields the ball in an attempt to not have it played by the opponent Playing distance relative to judging obstruction is whether the player with the ball can play the ball at any given moment or if the player is preventing an opponent from playing it

Fall 2011 Soccer Rules Session Dangerous Play A player shall be penalized for engaging in play that is of dangerous nature or likely to cause injury to oneself or an opponent Result = Indirect free kick Examples include: Raising the foot to the level that may endanger an opponent when the opponent is in a normal stance Scissor kicking and bicycle kicking, which may endanger an opponent Lowering the head to a position level with or below the waist in an effort to head the ball in the presence of an oncoming player A player other than the keeper covering the ball while sitting, kneeling or lying on the ground
