Using video pre-lectures and post seminar online collaborative software to extend the teaching time. Emma Elkington University of Hertfordshire Presented at UH Business School Learning and Teaching conference

What is my story about? What I did and why? What I used to do this and demonstration Brainstorming – how could this be used Student feedback My review of how it went

What I did and why? Masters module in Advanced Financial Reporting Needed to provide more directed learning

What did I use? Camtasia Record the screen Record PowerPoint Storing the videos – lots of options that allow you to embed into studynetoptionsstudynet Flash Meeting Elluminate

Brainstorming Could this be used on your courses and how?

Brainstorming Are there any pitfalls you can foresee?

Student Feedback Positive They knew the material was directly relevant to their course They did pre-lecture work and felt prepared for the topic areas Liked the ability to watch over and over again. They knew the material was current and up to date Points to improve Some would have liked interactivity in these sessions They would have liked these to include quizzes, links to articles and websites to add to their understanding. Scheduling of synchronous sessions

My review of how it went Positive Of the 16 students on the module 10 were fully engaged in all activities. 2 never appeared and therefore this had little impact on them. Pass rate increased to 69% As I was re-writing material anyway this had little impact on time (an hour and a half for a half hour lecture – including recording and uploading) Easy to do Can use again in future years. Points to improve Taking on board feedback from students re: quizzes – possible but not used this feature in camtasia More hands on experience of using the tool Better integration of other video clips into these presentations Better use of post seminar time.
