DAAD workshop, Zagreb, Sept The Tempus project: “ Joint M.Sc. Curriculum in Software engineering” Zoran Budimac DMI, Univ. of Novi Sad

Facts ► Joint M.Sc. Curriculum in SE ► To create a joint graduate curriculum in software engineering leading to the M.Sc. degree according to Bologna declaration. To provide an environment for teachers’ and student’s mobility. The curriculum would be common for all beneficiary partners and partly even for partners from EU. In addition, it will be of greater interest also for other universities in South-Eastern Europe. ► 3 years (1. Oct Sept. 2007) ► Budget: € 372,407 + € 20,000

Partners (1) ► Management  DMI, Univ. of Novi Sad, Zoran Budimac (coordinator)  Inst. of Informatics, Humboldt Univ., Klaus Bothe (contractor)

Partners (2) ► Partners from EU  Dept. of SE, Univ. of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain, Rebeca Cortazar  Soft. Technology Research Laboratory, De Montfort Univ., Leicester, UK, Hussein Zedan ► Beneficiary partners  Inst. of Informatics, Univ. of Skopje, Macedonia, Katerina Zdravkova  Electro-technical faculty, Univ. of Belgrade, Dragan Bojić  Fac. of Electronics, Univ. Of Niš, Milena Stanković

Partners (3) ► Individual experts  Ioan Jurca, ‘Politehnica’ Univ. of Timisoara, Rumania  Stanimir Stoyanov, Univ. of Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Origins of the project ► DAAD/Stability pact project (Berlin, Novi Sad, Skopje, Belgrade, Plovdiv, Timisoara)  According to Tempus rules ► Previous partners of NS (Leicester, Niš) ► One new: Bilbao  Clear roles, duties, responsibilities

Why not more partners? ► Realistic. ► Not easy to compose proposal for multi partner country projects (different and complicated selection procedures).  This year: 4 multi partner country projects of 28

Needs analysis ► SE not well developed in the region ► SE has a great impact to (software) industry, administration, business,… ► M.Sc. studies of ‘to-academic’ nature  ► Reformed M.Sc. studies in SE

Outcomes 1. Defined principles of M.Sc. studies in SE. 2. Defined curriculum. 3. New teaching materials provided or created. 4. ECTS introduced and curriculum internationally recognized. 5. Dissemination and sustainability. 6. Quality control and monitoring. 7. Management of the project. We promised ‘the whole package’:  Principle(s) of M.Sc. studies according to Bologna declaration  Inclusion of SE studies into these principles (practical exercises) + ECTS + International recognition  The set of (fully prepared!) courses  Start in students / 3 teachers from Mac to SCG (4 months/1 week); - 12 students / 5 teachers from SCG to SCG (4 months/1 week); - 5 teachers from EU to SCG (1 week)

Goals ► Establishing basic principles of M.Sc. studies in SE according to Bologna declaration and current EU practices. Those studies must be designed to fulfill labour market needs and needs for international student mobility. ► Creating the joint M.Sc. curriculum in such a way that every institution can adopt it with respect to regional needs and its own tradition. ► Implementing the curriculum. ► Establishing international recognition and quality control. ► Start of the studies in the summer semester of 2007 in at least one center, with students and teachers mobility across the region and with guest teachers from EU. ► Inclusion of other countries in South-Eastern Europe during the dissemination phase. The following universities are current partners of the DAAD project in the framework of the “Stability Pact” and, thus, could be later involved: the Universities of Tirana, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Zagreb, Kragujevac.

Results ► Duration of M.Sc. studies in SE: The curriculum should cover 4 semesters. However, the final decision concerning the duration should also be a matter of the project results. In addition, the duration may depend even on the conditions of the respective university. ► Structure of the M.Sc. curriculum in SE: The curriculum covers three semesters for lectures, exercises, and laboratory work and one semester for the master thesis. The courses have to be divided into compulsory and elective ones. Some of the courses can be institution-dependent. ► New Subjects of the curriculum: The final list of the subjects will be fixed only in the course of the project, i.e. it is a matter of project progress. Core modules of the curriculum should include project management, requirements engineering, software architecture, software quality, and software testing. Elective courses may include modules in reverse engineering, software measurement, software ergonomics, formal software specification, and others.

Inputs ► Equipment: 4 servers, 31 workstations, 2 laser printers, 1 scanner, 5 notebooks, 4 LAN infrastructures, 4 x system software, 4 x innovation of libraries. ► Mobility: ► Teaching staff: 31 flow from Partners to EU/Candidates 34 fows from EU/Candidates to Partners 8 flows from EU to EU 24 flows from from Partners to Partners 22 flows within partner countries ► Students: 5 flows from Partners to Partners 12 flows within a partner country ► Meetings: 4 workshops, 2 Inter-Tempus coaching workshops, 1 meeting, 3 project coordination meetings, 8 information sessions (dissemination) ► Publications: 2 writen course materials 8 information brochures
