Successful implementation of ECTS Installment of internal quality assurance structures Institutional and study programs accreditation Involvement of students on university decision processes Comparable study programs with European universities Still much to be done for integration in to Even though the Republic of Kosova is not yet formally participating in the Bologna Process, the University of Prishtina is among the first Higher Education Institutions in the region to begin the reform process according to the Bologna Process. The implementation of the reforms started in the academic year 2001/2002 and continues to date. The UP is committed to implementing the objectives coming out of the Bologna Process as well as aiming at integration into the European Higher Educ. Area and European Research Area. B. 4 Status of PhD studies at UP Till 2010 the doctoral studies were organized based on old model, consisting of individual study programs conducted in cooperation between a supervisor and doctoral candidate, research based, without structural coursework. In 2010 the UP faced the challenge to reform the doctoral studies in order to adapt to new changes derived from European regulation on third cycle. After exploring organization of doctoral studies at different European institutions and having in to considerations local conditions, both human resources and research infrastructure, the UP has chosen to follow up University of Zagreb - Croatia as a model on organization of third cycle studies. 7 The project consists of 2 main COMPONENTS: 1) Design & Implementation of PhD in Food Science & Technology 2) Bologna conform modernization of PhD structure & processes at the UP TEMPUS PhD in Food Science & Technology & Creating Capacities for PhD Reform at the University of Prishtina COMPONENT-1 3 Faculties of UP are going to be directly involved in this project namely - Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (coordinator), - Faculties of Humane Medicine, - Faculties of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. COMPONENT-1 will be lead mainly by - University of Prishtina (UP) and - Technische Universität München (TUM) B. 8 The Project addresses some of the most urgent problems in HE of Kosova, such as: - Necessity for curricular reform for the benefit of Higher Education - Necessity to start building capacities for reforming the 3rd cycle in HE in Kosova - Necessity to foster research, development, and build up expertise for the benefit of the society as a whole (with the focus on the field of food science & technology) - Necessity to promote internationalization of research and teaching process - Necessity to strengthen the local economy and specially agriculture and food production. 10 Role of UP To design and implement the PhD program with inputs from EU partners (esp. TUM). To accredit the study program by the national Accreditation Agency. To select 15 PhD students and to organize their research stay at partner universities. To send up to 20 teachers/researchers for study visits to TUM and UG. To host 10 EU guest lecturers. Role of partner universities To support and to coordinate the design and implementation of the new PhD Program To support research planning and internationalization. To host 15 PhD students for 2 months. To host 16 study visits of teaching staff. To provide 10 guest lecturers. 11 Current status of the project: Finished activities: -> design of the curriculum and syllabi development for lecturing and seminars;  PhD program has been accredited by KAA;  Laboratory equipment's are on place (250.000 Euro);  15 PhD students enrolled (mixed panel, members from UP & partners);  Joint lecturing with partners are completed (1 st and 2 nd semester). Actvities in process:  Implementation of fourth semester is in process;  The student mobility phase (2 months at least): end of 2013/beginning of 2014;  Joint mentorship for PhD thesis (based on UP PhD regulation) is in process. “PhD in Food Science and Technology” progress…… B. 14 PhD in Food Science & Technology & Creating Capacities for PhD Reform at the University of Pristina / Kosovo Recommendations/suggestions (for PhD counsel of UP): The UP should further organize doctoral studies of the same character to that of “PhD in food science and technology”. The UP should organize more interdisciplinary studies involving several departments and faculties of the UP. PhD candidates should be selected by a mixed panel of professors (UP and partners). The UP must ensure a minimum of 2 months internship (mobility) in a EU-University for every PhD student. Lectures should be jointly given by the professors from the UP- and EU-Universities. Joint supervision for each dissertation project, by UP- and EU-mentors/co-mentors. The doctoral regulation must assure a sustainable founding for consumables/ chemicals in dissertation projects. 15 The TEMPUS project will contribute: -…building up of an interdisciplinary, sustainable PhD study program in “Food Science and Food Technology” at the University of Prishtina - The curricular reform of the PhD studies in the UP, in accordance with Bologna process requirements, in order to support a quicker integration of UP and Kosovo HE system in the European Higher Education Area. -In addition the project will support the education of high qualified experts for food production and food technology in order to reduce the current high import trends of food in Kosova.
