IDT Meeting Welcome Brent Fultz California Institute of Technology Broad-brush overview of Hardware, Software, Management

ARCS Instrument Concept Image from Robb Williams March, 2002

Project Issues Written response by Dec. 1 to DOE Baseline Review of March Management Big Issue: Develop a Project Execution Plan Other Issue: Role of IDT Issues under Control: MOA, Reporting Requirements Technical Shielding, in-vacuum detectors Sample manipulation today — single crystal manipulation (later: sample changer) Other Issues: Choppers, optics, poisoning depth Software Plan today — web service

Big Hardware Issue #1: Instrument Shielding Progress: “Shared” and ARCS shielding calculations performed for RTBT wall, beamstop, “sample” Unpleasant Facts: Dosage to human in figure: rem/hour Beamstop: 4 meters in length, 2 m dia. Ideas: Sample hutch? Beamstop restrictions on SEQUOIA? SEQUOIA Fermi chopper placement?

Big Hardware Issue #2: Detector Tubes in Vacuum Concept: 8 Detectors per Module Neutron Shielding Read out card (ROC) mounting Status: Preliminary tests good Vacuum system in place at ANL Problem: We need to do try some cycling outgassing, etc. No prototype electronics yet ! (delays critical decision on vacuum operation)

Development of Software Plan No plan yet -- expected Jan User survey was quite successful -- Thanks. To make the plan, we have to: Select computing model Define the scope of the project Get experience in estimating effort

Project Execution Plan Not a project plan -- Doug will show the ARCS project plan. A Project Execution Plan gives principles for the Who, What, Why, When and How for how the project will get done. We need IDT input on some topics, especially: Role of IDT in project Change control procedures Milestones

Agenda Preliminary design review of goniometer concepts for single crystal manipulation 8:45 AM Brent Fultz -- Introduction 9:00 AM Robert Chave -- Concept for insertion stage 9:45 AM Robb Williams -- Concept for instrument stage 10:30 Break 11 AM Discussion 12 Lunch at Lujan Center (hosted) ARCS IDT meeting to settle some issues before the EFAC review on Oct. 9. 1:00 PM Doug Abernathy - project plan 1:20 PM Brent Fultz - project execution plan/management issues 1:40 PM Doug Abernathy - hardware progress/comments on MERLIN 2:10 PM Brent Fultz - software progress 2:40 PM Break // Tour of Pharos 3:30 PM General Discussion 5 PM Adjourn 7 PM Dinner at El Paragua in Espanola (Tim Kelley will explain)
