Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge 12 Neutron Choppers Fabrication and assembly of T0 chopper for powder diffractometer underway. Five 60-Hz bandwidth choppers have been delivered by Astrium, and have completed testing in the chopper lab at Argonne. Second procurement for 60-Hz bandwidth choppers has been awarded to Revolve. These will be magnetic bearing choppers. BW Choppers for Backscattering Spect.

Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge 13 Sample Environment Activities Standards – Documented standards for sample environment mechanical interfaces to instruments – Communication protocols developed and standardized – Functioning communication system tested Prototype development – Procuring several equipment items to develop sample holders, cryostat tails, etc – SBIR/STTR with Containerless Research, Inc to develop automated sample changing at low and high temperatures – Developing rapid-change refrigerator in collaboration with Penn State

Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge 14 Sample Environment Activities – cont’d Basic suite of general sample environment equipment will be procured in FY06-FY07 using operating budget – Inventory will be adequate to meet all needs for standard sample environments – Operating staff adequate to support needs for all operating instruments will be ramped up beginning in FY2005 Working with user groups to identify needs and pursue development of equipment for specialized sample environments – White paper and draft policy on magnetic field interference issues – Self-compensated high-field magnets

Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge 15 Analysis Software SNS is assuming an active role in the development of data analysis software The NESSI workshop to document requirements for such software was held at SNS October 13-15, 2003 Draft requirements document prepared SNS team leader for scientific computation (Steve Miller) on board Preliminary implementation plan prepared Extensive international collaboration Part of team is already at work

Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge Present Experimental Facilities Organization

Experimental Facilities DivisionOak Ridge 17 Summary 16 instruments in various stages of design, procurement, and installation (5 of them in SING Project) Common components infrastructure development is active – data acquisition, detectors, choppers, sample environment, analysis software Starting to change staffing mix to support installation and operation First instruments begin commissioning in 2006
