World Bank Program in Agriculture and Rural Development in Serbia Addresses issues key to global competitiveness Supports integration with the EU Five Projects: Real Estate Cadastre and Registration Project GEF Danube River Enterprise Pollution Reduction Project Irrigation and Drainage Rehabilitation Project Rural Business Environment Project GEF In-Situ Agro-biodiversity Conservation Project

Real Estate Cadastre and Registration Project Objectives: To increase confidence and lower transaction costs by building a more efficient property registration and cadastre system, with the purpose of contributing to the development of effective real property markets; To support the phased transfer of the legal property registration into the Real Estate Cadastre from the currently operating in some of the municipal courts in 20% of the Serbia; To support one of Serbia’s possible EU accession requirements, of efficient markets including real property markets. Irrigation and Drainage Rehabilitation Project Objectives: To increase agricultural productivity through support to high priority rehabilitation of drainage and irrigation infrastructure; To reduce the risk of damage from flooding to land, crops, property, infrastructure as well as reducing risk of life loss from flooding in project areas; and To improve water resources management and strengthen the associated water resource management institutions and policies. GEF Danube River Enterprise Pollution Reduction Project Total cost : US$ 22.7 million, Financing: GEF: US$ 9.0m, Beneficiaries: US$ 8.6m, SIDA: US$ 4.0 m; GoS: US$ 0.6 m; EAR: US$ 0.1 m. Implementation period: 2005 – 2009 Objective: To reduce nutrient flows into the Danube and its tributaries from selected livestock farms and slaughterhouses. Five components: Support to Policy and Regulatory Reform, Investments in Nutrient Reduction Water and Soil Quality Monitoring Public Awareness Raising and Replication Strategy Project Management and Impact Monitoring.

Rural Business Environment Project Objectives : To promote the competitiveness of the Serbian farms and agro-processing enterprises on global markets by assisting them in accessing markets, credit, and relevant technology and advice; and To alleviate rural poverty by providing matching grants for selected activities designed to boost employment and improve access to services by rural communities.

In-Situ Agro-biodiversity Conservation Project Total Project Cost: US$ 10 m Financing: GEF: US$ 5 m, Co-financing from IBRD loan: US$ 5 m Implementation period: 2007 – 2011 Objective To support the conservation of the globally important eco-system of the Stara Planina Nature Park and the endemic endangered flora and fauna species it harbors by promoting traditional sustainable and biodiversity-sensitive agricultural practices. Five components: Support to policy development and planning for agro-biodiversity conservation. Developing incentives for in situ agro-biodiversity conservation. Institutional capacity building. Raising public awareness and replication strategy Project management and impact monitoring.
