What is a Scalawag? It was a name given by former confederates to southern whites who supported republican reconstruction of the south. It was a name given by former confederates to southern whites who supported republican reconstruction of the south.

What is a Carpetbagger? Name given to a northern whites who moved south after the civil war and supported the republicans. Name given to a northern whites who moved south after the civil war and supported the republicans.

How did the Carpetbaggers get their name? Critics called the northerners carpetbaggers because they arrived with all their belongings in a cheep suitcase made of carpet fabric. Why did the south attracted Carpetbaggers? Many carpetbaggers were former union solders or members of the freedmen’s bureau who liked the south and wanted to settle there.
