CLASS SET Reconstruction: The effort to reorganize the seceded states and bring them back into the Union. Carpetbagger: A Northerner in the South who was working for the Reconstruction government. Scalawag: A white Southerner who supported Reconstruction after the Civil War. Impeach: To bring charges against. Black Codes: Laws limiting the rights of African Americans passed by Southern governments after the Civil War. Dry Farming: A method of farming that used a type of plowing that left loose soil on top of the ground, which kept water in the ground by slowing evaporation. Radical Republican: A Republican who believed that Congress should direct Reconstruction. Tenant Farming: Working land owned by another and paying rent either in cash or in shares of the crop. Sharecropper: A tenant farmer who is provided with seed, tools, living quarters, and food, and receives a share of the value of the crop. Freedmen: Freed slaves
