Through Build a lot of houses ‘…In a lot of different countries…’ ‘…Raise a lot of money to do so…’ Habitat’s Simple Message

A hero. Somebody that people can relate to. An obstacle. A conflict to overcome. A resolution. An ending to the story. Habitat’s simple message (Through 2005)

A hero. Somebody people can relate to. An obstacle. A conflict to overcome. A resolution. An ending to the story.

Why we need to expand the Habitat Conversation…. ? Our solution will not reach all families in need. The shelter issue is complex. So our solutions should reflect its complexity. Because we can do more. Our brand is a God- given resource to spend in service to our cause.

“Changing systems, policies and attitudes to achieve decent housing for all.” One way to expand the conversation

In the U.S. a record 37.5 million households spend more than 30% of their income on housing. 17 million spend at least 50%! Why we need to expand the conversation?

We cannot ensure housing for all simply by building more Habitat houses. Why is Habitat Involved in Advocacy? Despite being the wealthiest country in the world, nearly one third of the nation lacks affordable housing.

The size of the problem HFH’s impact through building houses Why is Habitat Involved in Advocacy? HFH impact through focusing on shelter by building and renovating simple, decent, affordable houses. And Advocating on behalf of those in need of decent shelter

Four strategic directions Habitat’s Message Today Create Housing Mobilize Capital Transform systems Develop People

Image vs. Identity Strategy Identity Core to how an organization sees itself How the organization operates Image What the public perceives about an organization relatively enduring metaphor for how an organization will pursue its goals

Image Strategy Identity Strategy, Identity and Image Strategy Identity

2005- Habitat served 25,000 families Habitat served 49,500 families: more than 2,000 housing solutions provided to families through advocacy By 2011, Habitat aims to serve 65,000 families annually Why We Are Expanding the Habitat Conversation? Image Identity We need to say “yes” to more people in need

How are we delivering the message today Two of HFHI’s mission principles… Focus on shelter by building and renovating simple, decent, affordable houses. Advocate to transform the injustice of current systems and make poverty housing unacceptable.

What a HTF? Nationally, 95 million people have housing problems 17 million spend more than 50% of their income on housing 37.5 million spend more than 30% on housing In New York, the lack of affordable housing impacts every region of the state NYS Habitat affiliates built 106 homes in These homes addressed the needs of 100 NYS families, but at this rate of building, it will take Habitat 5,536 years to solve the current problem alone. March 11, 2008

What is a housing trust fund? Housing trust funds (HTFs)are distinct programs, established by legislation, ordinance or resolution to receive dedicated public revenues to be spent on affordable housing. April, 2008 Housing trust funds (HTFs)are distinct programs, established by legislation, ordinance or resolution to receive dedicated public revenues to be spent on affordable housing.

How can HTFs help? Funds are dedicated to address the specific affordable housing needs of that area. HTFs are flexible! Can be used to both support existing programs and create new ones to address unmet needs March 11, 2008

Where does HTF money go? Eligible groups can vary widely.  Non-profit & private developers  Housing authorities  Tribal authorities March 11, 2008

What does all of this mean for Habitat for Humanity in NY State? HTFs are perfect opportunities for Habitat  HTFs often focus on and emphasize setting aside funds for nonprofits such as Habitat: Predevelopment projects Otherwise ignored projects Capacity building Targeted technical assistance March 11, 2008

Educate Provide information to the general public, key stakeholders and your own advocates about why HTFs are necessary March 11, 2008

Advocate Make your case – HTFs are the solution! The Importance of working together The more, the merrier! Join your SSO, they have already lay the ground work Housing Opportunity Fund & Empire State Housing Alliance – Already on your way!!
