16 Photos: Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance Benefits of working with the ACT Alliance brings together diverse organisations with extensive experience of responding to emergency situations and and undertaking long-term development programmes member organisations are local organisations and rooted in their own context churches continue to be present; they are the organisation at the end of the road and when all other NGOs leave, the churches remain.

18 Photos: Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance Membership criteria There are four membership criteria… 1.Churches and church-related organisations shall be either: a member church of the World Council of Churches (WCC) or Lutheran World Federation (LWF), or a specialised ministry for humanitarian assistance and/or development of a member church if it is constituted as a separate legal entity, or an organisation affiliated with at least one member church of the WCC through governance

19 Photos: Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance Membership criteria An exception may be made for: an organisation which was previously part of a member organisation but has become independent (such applications must come with the endorsement of the member organization) a church or an ecumenical organization that has had a long historical programmatic working relationship with the WCC and/or a regional ecumenical organisation an ecumenical organisations from a country where there are no member churches of either the WCC or LWF

20 Photos: Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance Membership criteria 2. The primary mandate of church-related organisations must be to work in the area of humanitarian assistance and/or development. 3. The church or church-related organisation must have a commitment to high quality development and/or humanitarian assistance activities. 4. The church or church-related organisation should be either a national, regional or international organisation.

21 Photos: Paul Jeffrey/ACT Alliance ACT observers The following types of organisations may also apply to be Observers: Regional ecumenical organisations and national councils of churches who do not have their own development or humanitarian assistance programmes Mission organisations belonging to member churches of the WCC and/ or LWF Global ecumenical bodies who wish to work closely with the alliance
