Introduction In this power point you will learn about which stain remover works most efficiently to remove the stains of ketchup and mustard. Oxi Clean has a unique formula that is activated by water, unleashing bubbling oxygen power for safe, effective cleaning. It also boosts your laundry water pH to improve your detergent’s cleaning ability, it has a few special ingredients that are designed to help rinse different stains away. Bleach must be diluted with water for safe use on fabrics. When chlorine bleach is used in the wash, it acts as a disinfectant on bacteria and viruses and generally whitens fabrics. Shout keeps the exact ingredient list of their stain removing products a guarded secret. The manufactures of Shout do disclose that the main ingredients in their stain-fighting products are surfactants and enzymes, and it is stated that they do not contain phosphorous or bleach. Tide-To-Go is made to immediately remove the stains of fresh food and drinks. You can apply the pen as soon as you wipe the residue off from the initial stain and then the stain should be gone within minutes. Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension of a liquid, the interfacial tension between two liquids, or that between a liquid and a solid. Surfactants may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants. Enzymes are biological molecules that catalyze chemical reactions

Purpose To determine which stain removers most efficiently remove the stain from the shirts.

Hypothesis The Stain remover that will work best is going to be Shout. Reasons to believe this statement is because, Shout has natural surfactants just as any other cleaning material. The only difference is that Shout actually has an added “undisclosed” ingredient that no other substance normally contains.

Materials 2- cotton white t-shirts. Ketchup Mustard Bleach Oxi-clean Spray-N-Wash Shout Tide-To-Go Pen Ring Stand Bunsen Burner Automatic Pipette Goggles Striker Stirring Rod Sharpie XTRA laundry detergent

Procedure 1. Lay out two cotton shirts for experimenting. 2. Prepare stain substances (Ketchup & Mustard) and apply five total splotches to opposite sides of the t-shirts to both shirts and measure initial stain. 3. While shirts are getting prepared, also have water being heated to mix with Oxi-Clean. 4. Once the water is warm, and the Oxi-Clean is mixed in, apply it to a stain with an automatic pipette. Be sure to label the stain with the specific cleaner being used. 5. Let the cleaner soak in, and be sure to rinse the pipette thoroughly before using with the next chemical. 6. Move on through each of the four cleaners using 1mL of stain remover until all are applied. 7. Let the shirts sit overnight to dry, until trail 2 the next day. 8. While performing trial 2 add 2mL of each stain remover to each individual stain. 9. Let the shirts sit over night then measure how much of the stain is on the shirt. 10. While the remaining stain remover is on the shirt, hand wash each individual stain with XTRA laundry detergent and let the shirts air dry. 11. Measure the reaming amount of stain and record data.

Before Experimenting with stain removers.

Trial 1 Mustard: Stains after 1mL of each stain remover was added to the stain.

Trial 1 Ketchup: Stains after 1mL of each stain remover was added to the stain.

Trial 2 Mustard: 2 mL of stain removers was added to each stain.

Trial 2 Ketchup: 2 mL of stain removers was added to each stain.

Ketchup These pictures are showing the remains of the stain after hand washing each individual stain with XTRA laundry detergent along with the specific stain remover on the stain.

Mustard These pictures are showing what's left of the stain after using the specific stain removers and hand washing the stain with XTRA laundry detergent.

Results Mustard Stain Removers Measurement of Stain (Cm)

Results Ketchup Stain Removers Measurement of Stain (Cm)

Conclusion The hypothesis is that Shout would remove the stains more completely than any of the other brands or stain removers. The results indicate that this hypothesis is true because Shout did remove the stain more completely than any of the other removers.
