Kitchen Kemicals 2 Design and carry out a fair test to see which cleaner cleans the best

Starting point: Do not copy. When designing a fair test you need to think about the things you will keep the same and the things you will change. These are the variables This fair test will be used as an assessment activity. You will be working in pairs (of your choosing)

Designing a fair test Don’t copy. The following is a check list to help you with designing a fair test. You will be given a copy of this check-list along with a template to help you with designing your fair test.

Is there a prediction about what will happen Identify things (variables) to be kept the same One thing (variable) that will be changed identified Explained how it will be changed What measurements will be recorded to get the data How will information (data be presented) Is there more than one trail Method is in a series of steps Steps are set out in logical order ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

tasks Using the handouts given and the information talked about: Design a fair test to compare 2 different washing powders and how well they remove a red food colouring stain.

Brainstorm: Things I could change: Temperature of water Volume of water Washing powder type Amount of washing powder How it is washed Amount of stain Type of material stained.

Things that I could measure: Thermometer for temperature Measuring cylinder for volume Stop-watch for time to stir Spoon for amount of washing powder Amount of stain added

Choosing: The one thing that I will measure is: how much the stain has disappeared. The one thing that I will change is: the type of washing powder The things not changed: Volume of water Amount of washing powder Temperature of water Time of stirring Amount of stain on same type of material

The question I want to answer When I change the washing powder what will happen to the red food colouring stain? What I think will happen: I think that _______ washing powder will remove the stain better. I think this will happen because it has ________________ in it.

My method You need to come up with a method of how you are going to do the experiment. It needs to be like a recipe, all the bases covered.

Method Measure 100 mL of cold tap water into 3 ice- cream containers To each add 1 tsp of different washing powders Stir each for 2 min until the washing powder has dissolved Add the stained material, 1 per container. Stir for 2 min in a clockwise direction Rinse for 1 min in clean cold tap water (100mL) Dry and then compare stains.

Results: Leave 3 lines The _________ washing powder was best. I was right/wrong with my hypothesis Conclusion
