INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY 2008 OVERVIEW

What is International Volunteer Day about? Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985, governments, UN and civil society organizations have successfully drawn together volunteers from around the world to celebrate the special day on the fifth of December every year. IVD provides a unique opportunity to highlight the achievements of the millions of volunteers worldwide and to encourage more people globally to engage in volunteer activities. The premise underlying IVD 2008 is that voluntary services are needed more than ever to tackle areas of concern in the social, economic, cultural, humanitarian and peace-building fields.
