Write a list of adjectives to describe what an LEDC country might be like What is it like in an LEDC? What is it like in an LEDC after a volcanic eruption?

LEDC – Volcano Case Study Nevada del Ruiz Aim: To find out what made the 1985 eruption of Nevado del Ruiz so deadly.

Strato Volcano

Note taking…. Cause: Effect:

Watch the Following Video and use it to complete your effects column YouTube The Eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano - Colombia 1985

Omarya Sanchez Red Cross rescue workers had apparently repeatedly appealed to the government for a pump to lower the water level and for other help to free the girl. Finally rescuers gave up and spent their remaining time with her, comforting her and praying with her. She died of exposure after about 60 hours.

Newspaper task – Nevado Del Ruiz It is the week after the eruption (November 1985). You are a journalist from Houston who has been sent to Colombia to report on the effects of the eruption. Your task is to write a 1-2 page article on what you have found…. Things you could include: Information about the location of the volcano Information about what caused the volcano to erupt Information about warning signs there were from the volcano Facts and figure to explain the effects Appropriate geographical terms (e.g. lahar, dormant, LEDC) Interviews with local people about what they felt about the eruption The impact of the country being an LEDC and how that made the impact worse.

Comparing Mt St Helens and Nevado Del Ruiz Create report that compares the causes and effects of the eruptions of both volcanoes. You should include: Information about the location of the volcano (Draw a map!) Information about what caused the volcano to erupt (Diagram of the type of volcanoes) Information about warning signs there were from the volcano Facts and figure to explain the effects Appropriate geographical terms (e.g. lahar, dormant, LEDC) and MEDC Compare the causes of death, the number of people killed and the responses to both eruptions from each country
