Nevado del Ruiz! By: Darryl Wylie

Some Facts! Nevado del Ruiz is the most historically active volcano in south America. It stands at 18,000 ft high. Nevado del Ruiz is in Columbia, South America. Columbia is one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Nevado del Ruiz is a volcano created as a result of collisions between the Nazca plate and the South American plate. Nevado del Ruiz rises 5,200 km above sea level. It is in the western side of Columbia.

What Happened? On the 13th November 1985 the Nevado del Ruiz erupted. This caused a huge mudflow where it descended down the mountain towards the town of Armero. The mudflow reached a massive 30 meters high and was travelling at 80 km per hour. The river Lagunillas Flooded and burst its banks because of the snow and ice that had ran down the side of the mountain. The mudflow hit the town of Armero at 11pm. By the morning a layer of mud 8 meters thick covered Armero and the surrounding areas. This mudflow also hit 7 other surrounding villages and destroyed them all.

THE MUDFLOW

MAP! Nevado del Ruiz has 5 other volcanoes in a line under it and this is what it looks like.

How Volcanoes work! Volcanoes work by the magma chamber erupting and sending lava, ash, lava bombs, steam, gas and dust in to the air. This lava melted the snow and ice on the top of the Nevado del Ruiz causing the water to rush down the volcano and caused the huge mudflow!
