Presentation on theme: "Management can reduce the effects of tectonic hazards."— Presentation transcript:

1 Management can reduce the effects of tectonic hazards.
Why do people live in tectonic areas and how are the possible effects being managed?

2 Why do people live in tectonic areas? In pairs discuss:
Which area of the world has the highest number of people potentially affected by tectonic activity? Why may some of these areas have higher death tolls caused by tectonic activity than other areas?

3 Plate boundaries, volcanoes and earthquakes.

13 Exam practice Explain why people still continue to live in areas of tectonic activity. (4 marks)

16 How can we protect ourselves against earthquakes?
Retrofitting

17 What would you put in your earthquake emergency kit? Why?

18 What have they done in Nepal and New Zealand?
Management and co ordination of open spaces Introduced strict building regulations so buildings can withstand earthquakes. Go bags – survival kits Old buildings have bee retrofitted. Red cross have set up warehouses with pre positioned supplies. Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) Community training for volunteers and earthquakes drills.

19 Exam practice-Evaluate the strategies used to manage earthquakes and volcanoes (6).
The three p’s are used to try to reduce the impacts of earthquakes and volcanoes. Earthquake warning systems can be used to detect earthquakes but only after an earthquake has begun which will not give enough time for people to prepare and evacuate. As a result this system is not effective however the data from these systems can be used to try and predict when the next earthquake will happen. Tiltmeters can be used to detect any changes in the earth’s crust which normally happen before a volcanic eruption. This allows people time to close up their homes and evacuate. Buildings can be designed to with stand earthquakes, this is called retrofitting. This can be successful but only normally happens in MEDC’s where there is the money available to buy these materials or reinforce older buildings………… Model answer….
