The Grand Challenge 3NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis #AsteroidGC Find all asteroid threats to human populations and know what to do about them

FY14 Asteroid Initiative: What and How Asteroid Initiative Both sets of activities leverage existing NASA work while amplifying participatory engagement to accomplish their individual objectives and synergize for a greater collective purpose. This session is focused on how citizen science and crowdsourcing can assist in the components of the Grand Challenge. Enhanced NEO Observation Campaign Asteroid Mission Asteroid Grand Challenge Robotic Mission to Redirect an Asteroid, SEP Human Mission to an Asteroid Diverse Stakeholder Engagement Mitigation Approaches Learning how to manipulate and interact with a NEA

Goals of Session Share ideas for how crowdsourcing and citizen science might contribute to the Grand Challenge Discuss overlaps and synergies between presented ideas Discuss specific areas where crowdsourcing and citizen science can meaningfully augment current observation work in the short, medium, and long term Discuss barriers to these types of projects and strategies for overcoming those barriers Capture notes in the grand challenge wiki being developed to preserve knowledge and brainstorming 5NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis #AsteroidGC This session seeks to begin the discussion with the global community about crowdsourcing and citizen science as they relate to the asteroid grand challenge. This input will inform the beginnings of a co-created, community implementation plan.

Working Definitions Citizen Science is a form of collaboration where members of the public participate in scientific research to meet real world goals. The value of citizen science for producing scientific data and educating volunteers is well-established. Citizen science is also considered a paradigm where the needs and activities of an engaged public are intertwined with professional scientific research. Related terms include public participation in scientific research, volunteer monitoring, and participatory action research. Crowdsourcing is a process where individuals or organizations solicit contributions from a large group of unknown individuals (“the crowd”) or, in some cases, a bounded group of trusted individuals or experts. –Crowdsourcing can results in a number of products, services, ideas, or content. –Contributors to crowdsourcing projects may or may not be domain experts, and may or may not be paid for their efforts. –Crowdsourcing often occurs online, and employs a piecemeal approach where different individuals contribute small portions to a final project or product (“microtasking”). Crowdsourced Science is a method of soliciting contributions from a large group of people to accomplish scientific goals. Crowdsourced science typically designates a relatively limited and short-term involvement that exists primarily or exclusively online. 6NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis #AsteroidGC

Synthesis and Discussion Address additional questions about presented ideas for how crowdsourcing and citizen science might contribute to “finding all asteroid threats to human populations and knowing what to do about them.” Discuss overlaps and synergies between presented ideas Discuss specific areas where crowdsourcing, citizen science projects and the work of amateur astronomers can meaningfully augment current observation work in the short, medium, and long term Discuss barriers to these types of projects and strategies for overcoming those barriers 9 NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis #AsteroidGC

Next Steps Utilize the wiki to further develop and continue to share your ideas Participate in the Planetary Resources Inc.–NASA Asteroid Zoo early next as the first serious way to contribute to the execution of the Asteroid Grand Challenge Look for the Asteroid Grand Challenge Virtual Seminar Series to begin early next year Participate in the virtual Maker Meet-ups we plan to begin early next year Look for the Asteroid Grand Challenge at the Maker Faire in San Mateo and some exciting challenges leading up to the event Let us know how you and your communities want to participate because this is OUR Grand Challenge Spread the word! 10NASA Asteroid Initiative Idea Synthesis #AsteroidGC
