3 SIOP Guidance for Leaders In general, SIOP Teacher Leaders and District Leaders are expected to: 1. Support the SIOP Model in positive and productive ways 2. Attend school and district meetings to plan for, promote, implement, and sustain the SIOP Model 3. Develop and deliver "mini" sessions for teachers in your building to facilitate a deeper understanding of the Model 4. Visit classrooms to observe SIOP Lessons 5. Engage in meaningful and supportive coaching conversations with teachers, administrators, and district leaders related to SIOP implementation 6. Brainstorm and model strategies to sustain the use of the SIOP Model within your school. 7. Engage in continuous learning

Classroom visits to observe SIOP Lessons 4. Written feedback following SIOP observations 5. Materials for use in SIOP classrooms to support teachers and students using the SIOP Model within your school. 6. Wiki sites to provide resources and to engage in continuous learning

12 District Outcomes Student Achievement Target group (Think about which students you really want to see improvements in and how you want that improvement to look) Plan to collect data (test scores and learning behaviors) Teaching and Learning Pre/ Post Implementation data about what teaching looks like in your room, hall/dept., school (teacher directed, lecture, hands-on) What does engagement look like? What are students doing as they learn? Planning and Collaboration What does planning look like? (lesson plans, interactions, sharing, peer observations, coaching conversations, professional maturity, online communities) District-Level Support Identify specific strategies to support based on specific needs of students

13 Implementation to date… DPI Roll out Initial Training - 2007 - 2008 Initial Training for core teachers from each school by ECU Instructors -2007 - 2008 Pink Hill Moss Hill Woodington South Lenoir Follow up with ECU Instructors (during learning year) Initial Training for core teachers (ECU Instructors) – 2008 - 2009 Southeast (total school) Rochelle (selected teachers and administrators) LaGrange (invited key persons) Make up for target schools (teachers who were not trained first time and some took it a second time to become ready for leadership) Summer of 2009 Training for District team by NCDPI (Summer 2009) SIOP Leadership Training by Pearson Trainer – 2009 - 2010 Administrators from target schools and teacher leaders from each school – November of 2009 (2 days) Teacher Leaders work in schools to support and facilitate implementation Classroom observations by district SIOP Leaders

Each School that is already in year 2 or 3 of implementation will share their progress and strategies with the group Show/share your written implementation plan How has the plan helped/guided your thinking as you have worked through the process? What tips or suggestions might you give other schools just starting? Schools listening, use the coaching log to document/ take notes as you listen.
