Lesson 12: What Happens When Substances are Mixed with Water? Key Terms

A substance that dissolves Soluble A substance that dissolves

A substance that does not dissolve. Insoluble A substance that does not dissolve.

The substance in a solution that dissolves the solute. Solvent The substance in a solution that dissolves the solute.

Solute The substance that dissolves in a solvent. Solutes can be solids, liquids, or gases.

Solution A homogeneous mixture of a solvent and a solute. In which they are both evenly mixed.

Dissolve The process that takes place when a solvent is mixed with a solute to make a solution. For example, when sodium chloride is mixed with water, it dissolves to form a solution of sodium chloride in water.

Purpose: Using the vocabulary terms that we have just learned create a purpose for the lab that we have discussed.
