Matter Chapter 3 Mixtures, Elements, and Compounds

2 Classifying Matter Mixtures Solutions Elements Compounds

3 Mixtures When two or more substances are mixed together.
The substances that make up a mixture can be in any amount. Not chemically combined. No new chemical substances have been formed. Physical properties make it possible to separate mixtures. No chemical reactions are involved.

4 Mixtures are classified according to how “well mixed” they are.

5 Heterogeneous Mixtures
A mixture that does not appear to be the same color throughout. “least mixed” The particles are large enough to be seen and easy to separate from the mixture.

6 Homogeneous Mixtures A mixture that appears to be the same color throughout. “well mixed” Particles are very small and not easily recognized. They do not separate while standing.

7 Colloids The particles in a colloid are constantly bombarded by other particles in this mixture. This makes colloids appear cloudy. Look at page 64 figure 3-9

8 Solutions Formed when one substance dissolves in another. “Best mixed”

9 Solute Solvent The substance that is being dissolved.
The substance that does the dissolving.

10 Insoluble Solubility Soluble A substance that dissolves in water.
A substance that does not dissolve in water.

11 Solubility The amount of a solute that can be completely dissolved in a given amount of a solvent. It is affected by several factors such as temperature.

12 Alloys Metal solutions are called alloys. Solids dissolved in solids.
