Presentation transcript:

 London Based Charity, Established by first generation British Somalis in 1984  Serves refugee communities from the Horn of Africa as well as other African and Caribbean communities  Services for these communities include: › Job searches › Finding housing › Translation services › Youth Programmes

 Horn of Africa Community Group Youth Programme › Inspire Drama Programme › Inspire Sports Programme  Develop interest and work towards life goals  Develop interest in volunteerism  Large group of committed volunteers through youth programme

 Somaliland suffered from brutal Civil War which led to it being described as one of the most desperate places on earth  Often over looked as it is not recognized by many global intuitions as the World Bank, IMF, or any other foreign Government  Many street children are left alone to fend for themselves which leads to delinquency and drugs without access to education or other resources One of World’s poorest places, in desperate need from the international community

 Focus on the youth of Hargeisa, Somaliland  Hope to impact public schools, orphanages, and neglected street children  Unique programmes: › Inspire Sports Programme › Community Computing Centre › Inspire Media Programme › Documentary  Partnership: HAVOYOCO

 Afternoon and evening sessions of recreational football and basketball for girls and boys  Will help children develop healthy lifestyles and life skills.  Diversionary activity to reduce crime and the rampant drug use  In addition to training coaches and staff, help is needed to clean and refurbish the football pitch and basketball court  Sustainable by training HAVOYOCO volunteers

 Hope to bring easy access to laptops and internet for the disadvantaged youth  Weeklong course in: › Basic computing skills › Programming and text editing software › Internet and search engines › Will receive diploma and daily access to technology  Will enhance education and skills for future careers  Additionally, a website will be put into place so children can connect with tutors online in London to further advance their education

 Plan to hold workshops in Hargeisa where community youth can share their stories and together can create a script  Also will help children develop filming skills, learning to edit, film, and ultimately produce short movies  Help is needed for film equipment such as cameras and microphones

 One goal of trip is to film the young people volunteering and interacting with the members of the community  The film will be used to raise awareness of the conditions in Somaliland  All film proceeds will go directly to the charity efforts in Somaliland  Ultimately, we want this project to grow over time to fit the needs of the community of Hargeisa

 Our partner organisation in Hargeisa  Founded in 1992 by the youth in Hargeisa  It addresses primarily the needs of the disadvantaged and vulnerable people  Their vision is to alleviate poverty through sustainable development. It aims to operate effectively to help the people of Horn of Africa.
