Objective Develop a long-term, cost-effective sustainable way to promote disability awareness in the community

Basic Principle At the core of the initiative is the recognition that education and educational environments are a critical support for assisting, understanding, discussing and developing a sense of democracy for students between the ages of 14–17 and can provide the catalyst to creating awareness and understanding around their responsibilities and roles in their own communities and society in general

Utilising Existing Resources more effectively Assessment of existing resources –Access Officer Network supported by Local Government Management Agency –National Disability Authority customisable e-Learning module –Transition Year programme interested in considering social innovation projects –Senior Management interest and commitment –Create long-term Corporate Social Responsibility ethos

Development of Project Established a small effective project team Established immediate contact with partners: –National Disability Authority, Department of Education Professional Development service for teachers, Local Government Management Agency, Special Olympics Ireland Produced detailed briefing document Presented proposal at the Transition Year Coordinators’ Conference in Athlone

Element 1 of the Project Students interact in the bespoke National Disability Authority e-learning module using either their personal or school’s computer Using video case studies of real life experiences Check points at each key point of learning Prepares students for work experience

Element 2 of the Project Prepare a piece of visual imagery which reflects and is representative of the students’ consideration of disability and accessibility in its broad interpretation Inter–school poster competition which will form the basis of an awareness campaign in 2013

Outcomes Transformational learning qualities which students will be exposed to during both elements of the project is important to both educators and students Transition Year learning activities underpin civic duties involving the community and voluntary sector. The module supports the personal, social, vocational and educational development and prepares them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society
