Introducing the On-Line SPIKES A Pilot Project Fall Semester

SPIKE: A Reminder! S ocio-Cultural P rofessional I ndustrial K nowledge E xperience

Why? The European Framework for Key CompetencesThe European Framework for Key Competences as recommended by the European parliament in 2006 proposes a lifelong learning policy with particular focus on: Communication in the mother tongue; Communication in foreign languages; Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology; Digital competence; Learning to learn; Social and civic competences; Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; Cultural awareness and expression

About the Online SPIKE Events These SPIKE events are 100% Internet-based. Registration, participation and completion are all conducted online. You can complete the online SPIKES when and where you want at any point during the academic semester. You decide!

English Language Development All the online SPIKE events are held in English These events can therefore be helpful in improving your general level of English.

Computer Skills Since these SPIKE events are all conducted through the Internet, they provide you with the opportunity to improve your computer skills!

Study Skills A number of these online events have been selected to help you improve your study skills.

Other Subjects Other events give you the chance to learn a little about some other subjects and therefore contribute to: Improving your General Knowledge

Active Participation For all of these online SPIKE events you are asked to complete a short activity in order to get your SPIKE credit. These SPIKE events therefore involve your ACTIVE PARTICIPATION!

Rules and Regulations! You may do only one online SPIKE event per semester for each course you are taking! You must do your online SPIKE events according to the code of the course you are taking: (GE / GEED 101, GE / GEED 102, GE / GEED 201, GE / GEED 202)

Getting Started Go to: This is the MOODLE of the General Education Department

Click Login on the right of the screen

Follow the instructions to create your account on GEMOODLE

Go to the SPIKE category on the front page and read the instructions carefully.

Choose the SPIKE course you are taking

For example, GE101. You will see that you have a choice of events. Choose the one that interests you most.

Register! You will be asked if you wish to enrol for the event. Say ‘yes’, if you wish to continue. NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE OPENED YOUR MOODLE ACCOUNT TO REGISTER FOR THE EVENT!

STUDY! Browse through the materials and select those that you find most interesting to look at further. THERE IS NO NEED TO STUDY ALL THE MATERIALS! BE SELECTIVE!

To Get Your SPIKE Credit, you must complete the questionnaire-activity at the end of the event.

If you do not complete this form in full, you will not get any credit for the SPIKE event.

Copying Just a small reminder: Please do the activity in your own words – the computer software will detect copying and your SPIKE credit will be withdrawn from you. Thanks!

How long will these online SPIKE events take? It’s up to you how much you want to take from these events. However, you might aim for most events at spending around 2 hours to make sure you benefit from the material. Yes, this is more time than a conference, but on the other hand you can study at your own pace and in your own time.

Do we have to take online SPIKES? No! You can complete all your SPIKES through the standard advertised events if you wish.
