CONSORTIUM OF ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH LIBRARIES IN ILLINOIS CARLI Annual Meeting, November 9, 2012 Desired Functionality for the Next ILS: A Brainstorming Session for the CARLI Annual Meeting, 2012

The current CARLI ILS  “I-Share” is CARLI’s name for the system  Ex Libris Voyager v  80 CARLI libraries participating (including 4 in implementation)  Supports for each library:  OPAC, circ/reserves, acq/ser, cataloging/authority control, patron-initiated requesting, reporting  Supports for the consortium:  Resource sharing and union catalog

Voyager’s future  Ex Libris has no current plan to suspend support or development of Voyager  Version 8.2 is released, v. 9 is planned for late 2013…  There are over 1000 libraries using Voyager  Ex Libris is developing a new product, Alma, but it is not an upgrade to Voyager, but rather an entirely new product. CARLI would need to do an RFP to select any new ILS, even an Ex Libris product.

When is CARLI moving to a new ILS?  We are not yet doing a formal search, but we are very interested in learning about new products and monitoring the projects of other consortia.  CARLI will need to do a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a purchase or license of a new ILS. An RFP process of this scope can easily take a year or more.  Planning for, and migrating a system the size of I- Share is also likely to take well over a year.

What we want to talk about today…  Session title is :“What functionality is critical in the next ILS”  We could spend days creating such a list  So let’s make some assumptions as to what would be the “basics” of any modern ILS  And let’s then focus on  Functionality we don’t have now  Functionality consortia need or could benefit from  Your blue sky ideas and wishes

The basics include  Basic library management functionality for print materials (cataloging, circ, etc.)  A consortial “OPAC” view of participating libraries’ collections.  Consortial resource sharing of print materials  Scalable to our system’s size and growth  Affordable

Some discussion starters  Management of electronic resources and e-books  Access to digital collections  Expanded collaboration with other, non-I-Share libraries  Mobile apps  Reporting and assessment tools  The future of the union catalog and its uses  Patron/demand driven acquisitions  And we want to hear your ideas not listed here!
