What is RTI? Purpose

 How a school responds to students who are not progressing.  Organized into three Tiers in order to provide intervention at various levels based upon need.  Intensity and nature of intervention adjusted as appropriate.

Screening The Tier Model State of the Schools Progress Monitoring

 PALS (K-3) › Given in Fall  Virginia SOL › 3 rd grade results (for 4 th graders) › 4 th grade results (for 5 th graders) We use standardized assessments that have validity and are usually those that are required by our school division.

 All students in the school are included. › Basic instruction including differentiation. › Standard classroom interventions. › Approximately 80 % of school population will be successful in this environment.

 Students not passing SOL or PALS test › Small group instruction-no more than 5 students per group. › More intensive remediation with Reading Specialist (including guided reading instruction). › Approximately 15% of school population.

 Students scoring on SOL; and lowest range on PALS.  Targeted instruction on a selected skill over a minimum of 4-6 weeks.  Groups of 1-3 students with Reading Specialist (working on same skill).  Progress monitored (minimum of weekly) to assess growth by Reading Specialist.  Data gathered must be measureable and graphed for evidence of growth over the period of intervention.  Progress monitored (monthly) by RTI team.

 Fairview 4 th grade (VA SOL)  Fairview 5 th grade (VA SOL)  Fairview 4 th & 5 th grade combined  PALS benchmarks

 Choose a skill based on student need › Math › Behavior  Standard Direct Behavior Rating › Reading  Maze (interventioncentral.org)  Oral Reading Fluency  Letter Name Fluency  Progress Monitoring Tools › PALS Quick Checks (PALS website) › Benchmark Tests / Snapshots › AIMS Web › Interactive Achievement
