Transportation Tuesday TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY Driving faster can lead to disaster Speed! This topic is always repeated…. Why repeat? We all know that if you drive fast you may end up in an accident and the solution to this, is to drive within the speed limits… Now, do you agree that speed does not kill? It is moronic lack of thought that kills, inattention that kills and disregard to fellow human beings that kills but not speed!! What do you think?

Transportation Tuesday To a certain extent you can say that speed does not kill, that is only if you are fully aware of your actions and if you can control your vehicle. Driving fast- where the danger lies Most people like to drive fast. It is common amongst teenagers and young adults. Sometimes experienced drivers also feel that they are in control. Inevitably, no matter how skilled or careful you are, there is always the possibility of the unexpected happening to you and your vehicle.

Transportation Tuesday Is speed really dangerous? The driver struck a pole while driving fast. Remember speed increases the stopping distance. If you drive too fast, you may not be able to stop in time to avoid a crash. Visualise this. If the vehicle was travelling at low speed and strikes the pole, the driver faces minimum damage and survives. At high speed the damage is catastrophic.

Transportation Tuesday Try maintaining the speed limit but if you decide go a little beyond, maintain situation awareness. Constantly scan your mirrors and gauges. Try not to have your music too loud. This way you can listen to your vehicle as you drive. Drive at moderate speed and use your judgement whilst driving in traffic. Driving too slow can obstruct traffic and driving too fast can increase the chances of a serious accident. Seat belts save lives. So remember to buckle up. Determine the appropriate speed Consider these factors…

Transportation Tuesday Determine the appropriate speed Consider these factors… Your speed should be based on visibility, traffic, road and weather conditions. If you have to get to a destination at a certain time, plan ahead and give yourself time to reach there without having to drive fast. Check your tyres before you drive. Worn out tyres can lead to an accident, especially when speeding. Consider the speed of other vehicles. Adjust your speed so that you do not collide. Let them proceed if they are on the same lane. It might be annoying but try not to compete or get angry. Life is too precious for that!
