Accidents are the leading cause of death for children in NSW More than half of all accidental deaths amongst 5-14 year olds involve road traffic accidents Over 714 children aged 5-16 have been killed or injured across the Hunter and Central Coast area in the last 3 years.

Look! Listen! Think!  Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time you cross the road  Use a safe place to cross the road Car passenger safety  Click, clack, front ‘n’ back  Always buckle up in your seatbelt  Get in and out of the car on the footpath side Bus passenger safety  Wait till the bus has gone  Wait till the bus has gone and then use a safe place to cross the road Safety on wheels  Always wear a helmet  Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate  Ride your bike in a safe place away from the road  Ride your bike away from busy roads

11 PUBLIC SCHOOLS NSWWWW.SCHOOLS.NSW.EDU.AU younger than 4yrs Children younger than 4yrs cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows. 4yrs to under 7yrs Children 4yrs to under 7yrs cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than 7yrs in a child restraint or booster seat. 7yrs and 16 yrs Children aged between 7yrs and 16 yrs must use a booster seat if they are too small to be restrained by a seatbelt properly adjusted and fastened Child restraint laws

12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS NSWWWW.SCHOOLS.NSW.EDU.AU No Parking (Drop off zone) You must not stop on a length of road to which a No Parking sign applies unless you are dropping off, or picking up, passengers or goods. (Drop off zone) No Stopping You must not stop on a length of road to which a No Stopping sign applies. Bus Zone You must not stop or park in a Bus Zone unless you are driving a public bus. 13 PUBLIC SCHOOLS NSWWWW.SCHOOLS.NSW.EDU.AU Bus passenger Wait till the bus has gone Wait till the bus has gone and then use a safe place to cross the road Students waiting to board the bus in the afternoon are supervised by teachers. It is safest to walk with your child to the bus stop in the morning and wait at the bus stop in the afternoon to collect your child where possible.

14 PUBLIC SCHOOLS NSWWWW.SCHOOLS.NSW.EDU.AU Bicycle travel Students under the age of 10 should not ride bicycles to or from school unless accompanied by an adult bicycle rider. Children must correctly wear a Standards Approved Australia helmet Ride your bike in a safe place away from the road

Modelling safe road user behaviour Ensuring that children are protected whilst travelling through the use of helmets and seat-belts and well maintained bicycles Parking vehicles safely outside the school and observing all parking signs Reinforcing the safety messages delivered at school Actively supervising the travel of young students
