Reading Levels 3-5 The booklet will contain three texts. The least demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty. Children will have a total of one hour to read the texts and complete the questions at their own pace. The questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); shorter, open response items; and longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding.

Reading Level 6 (selected children only) The level 6 test consists of: a reading booklet containing around three or four texts based on a single theme. a reading answer booklet comprising approximately 25 questions (totalling marks). Children are given ten minutes to read the reading booklet and 50 minutes to answer the questions in the answer booklet. They can refer back to the texts in the reading booklet throughout the test. NB: All children taking the level 6 test must have also taken the level 3-5 test and have achieved level 5 if they are to achieve level 6.

The English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test Levels 3-5 The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test at levels 3-5 has two components, worth a total of 70 marks: a booklet of short-answer questions a spelling task Paper 1, the short-answer questions, consists of between 40 and 50 questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. The questions are: selected response items (such as multiple choice questions) or short, open response items, in which children may have to write a word, a few words or a sentence. Paper 2, the spelling task

The English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test Level 6 (selected children only) This test consists of three components, worth a total of 50 marks: an extended writing task a booklet of short-answer questions a spelling task Paper 1 assesses children’s grammar, punctuation and vocabulary through a short piece of writing. Paper 2 consists of between 18 and 21 questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Paper 3 the spelling task. NB: All children taking the level 6 test must have also taken the level 3-5 test and have achieved level 5 if they are to achieve level 6.

The Mathematics Test Levels 3-5 The test consists of: two non-calculator papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting 45 minutes. mental mathematics test, lasting approximately 20 minutes.

The Mathematics Test Level 6 The level 6 mathematics test (selected children only) consists of: Paper 1 – a non-calculator paper, lasting 30 minutes Paper 2 – a calculator available paper, lasting 30 minutes NB: All children taking the level 6 test must have also taken the level 3-5 test and have achieved level 5 if they are to achieve level 6.

How are the tests different this year? This year, the tests will be marked on screen. The children will need to ensure they write within the given area. Responses in the margins or the grey zones will not be marked. The children will be given special, dark pencils to use for the mathematics papers. They need to use black or blue ink for all written parts of the test – any other colours cannot be scanned. Each booklet will have a barcode. Pupils must not colour them in or write on them as this is how their script is identified. Children must not write on or around the lines at the top and bottom of a page. Is science tested? A sample of students throughout the country are tested in science every other year. This year there will be no science tests.

When do we know the results? The school receives the results in July. You will receive them in your child’s report. Sometimes, we need to challenge results. This only happens rarely but if we do want the marking reviewed we need to apply by 17 th July and will know the outcome by 4 th September.
