5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department3 Ladders Identify types of Fire Service Ground Ladders.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department4 Ladders Single Ladders Nonadjustable One Section Sometimes called Wall Ladders Used for quick access to windows and roofs of 1 story & 2 story buildings. Generally available in even-foot lengths from feet.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department5 Ladders Roof Ladders Equipped at tip with folding hooks for anchoring ladder to roof edge. Used to distribute firefighter’s weight during roof work. May also be used as single wall ladders. Lengths range from feet.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department6 Ladders Folding Ladders Have hinged rungs. Fold so that one beam rests against the other. Can be carried in narrow passageways. Used in attic scuttle holes and in small rooms and closets. Are commonly from 8-16 feet long. Must be equipped with safety shoes.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department7 Ladders Extension Ladders Adjustable in length. Length indicated on ladder equals the length of the side rails when fully extended. Used to provide access to windows and roofs within their limits Generally range in length feet.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department8

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department9 Ladders Pole ladders Any extension ladder 40feet or longer must be equipped with staypoles for added stability and leverage when raising. Most do not exceed 50 feet. May have 2 to 4 fly sections.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department10 Ladders Combination Ladders May be used as either single ladder, extension ladder, or stepladder(A- Frame) Length ranges from 8-14 feet. Must be equipped with positive locking devices to hold ladder in open position.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department11 Ladders Pompier Ladder Single beam ladders with rungs projecting from both sides. Sometimes called Scaling Ladders. Tips are large, metal goosenecks used for securing the ladder in a window or other opening.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department12 Ladders Pompier Used to climb from floor to floor via exterior windows. Lengths vary from feet.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department29 Ladders Climbing and Working on Ladders

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department30 Ladders Ladder climbing should be done smoothly and rhythmically. The climber should ascend the ladder so that there is the least possible amount of bounce and sway. This smoothness is accomplished if the climber’s knee is bent to ease the weight on each rung.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department31 Ladders The climber’s arms should be kept straight during the climb; this action keeps the body away from the ladder and permits free knee movement during the climb. When using the rungs, the hands should grasp the rungs with the palms down and the thumbs beneath the rung.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department32 Ladders An option for hand placement when climbing ground ladders is to climb while sliding both hands up behind the beams to maintain constant contact.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department33 Ladders

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department34 Ladders When working from a ground ladder, either a Class I life safety harness(ladder belt) or a leg lock can be used.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department35 Ladders Rescue on a Ladder

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department36 Ladders Conscious victims are lowered feet first from the building onto a ladder. Unconscious victim is held on a ladder in the same way as a conscious victim except that the victim’s body rests on the rescuer’s supporting knee. The victim’s feet are placed outside the rails to prevent entanglement.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department37 Ladders A similar way to lower an unconscious victim involves using the same hold by the rescuer described in the previous rescue, but the victim is turned around to face the rescuer. This position reduces the chances of the victim’s limbs catching between the rungs.

5/18/2015Dixon High School Fire Department38 Ladders An conscious or unconscious victim is cradled in front of the rescuer, with the victim’s legs over the rescuer’s shoulders, and the victim’s arms draped over the rescuer’s arms. This method is also very effective with extremely heavy victims, whether are conscious or not.
