Presentation transcript:

Wednesday, 12/11 Objective: Identify techniques used to create the illusion of depth in a drawing by reading a text and taking notes using the Cornell Notetaking Method. Create three different designs that use perspective techniques to create the illusion of depth. Drill 1.A flat enclosed area is called a ____. 2.An object that takes up space and has three- dimensions is called a _____. 3.Is a drawing a two-dimensional or three dimensional work of art?

Doris Lee. Thanksgiving Oil on Canvas. 28”x40”. The Art Institute of Chicago.

Cornell Note Taking 1.Write your name, period, date and topic on the top of the paper. 2.Guided practice. 3.Use ten minutes to take notes on the rest of the text. 4.Compare your notes. Generate summarizing statements for the bottom section. 5.Compare notes and list on the board.

To Do Create three different designs on three separate pieces of paper. Each design should contain five shapes. Use the same five shapes in each design as follows: 1.Draw all of the items as close to the foreground as possible. 2.Draw one item close to the foreground and make the others look as if they are slightly farther back. 3.Draw one item close to the foreground, one far in the background and the other three in the middle ground.

Exit Ticket Name four techniques used to create the illusion of depth in a picture.

Friday, 12/6 Objective: Create a scene using collage and drawing that creates the illusion of depth using overlapping, placement, size and detail. Drill 1.The topic you read about yesterday had to do with creating ___________. 2.Three techniques used for creating the illusion of depth are ___, ____ and ___. 3.If you want to make objects appear in the foreground where do you need to place them on the page? 4. How can you use size relationships to create the illusion of depth in a picture. 5. Draw the following shapes so that one appears in the foreground, one in the background and one in the middle ground.

Vocabulary: Size, placement, overlapping, detail, color Take turns with people at your table to discuss how the illusion of depth is created in this picture. After you have gone around twice write four sentences that summarize what the group discussed. (You are each turning in your own paper)

In your visual journal: Create a scene using magazine cutouts that exhibits a foreground, middle ground and background. Consider overlapping, size, placement and detail. You may want to also think about converging lines. After you have cut and decided on the arrangement of the images glue them down. Apply a thin layer of gesso on top. Add details, and alter the image by drawing over them.

Exit Ticket Give specific examples about how you created the illusion of depth in the image you created.

Wednesday, 12/11 Objective: Create a scene that creates the illusion of depth by repeating one shape or object using overlapping, placement, size and detail. Drill 1.List four techniques used to create the illusion of depth in a picture. 2.In creating the illusion of depth in a picture objects in the foreground will appear ____ than objects in the background. 3.When creating the illusion of depth in a picture, having objects sit at the bottom of the frame makes them appear ______ to the viewer. 4.Draw the objects on the right so that one appears in the foreground, one in the background and one in the middle ground. Use size, placement and overlapping.

Vocabulary: Size, placement, overlapping, detail, color Take turns with people at your table to discuss how the illusion of depth is created in this picture. After you have gone around twice write four sentences that summarize what the group discussed. (You are each turning in your own paper)

To Do Create an imaginary surrealist scene that has a clear foreground, middle ground and background. Use overlapping, placement, size and detail to create the illusion of depth. 1.Follow the directions and diagrams on the board to create four sketches in your visual journal. 2.Select your best or most interesting drawing and enlarge it on 16x20 paper with pencil.

Exit Ticket How did you create the illusion of depth in your drawing?

Monday, 1/6 Objective: Create a surreal scene that creates the illusion of depth by repeating one shape or object using overlapping, placement, size and detail. Drill 1.What is in the foreground of the image? 2. How is the illusion that there is a foreground and a background created? Give two specific examples. 3. What appears strange or unreal about the scene?

Notes Surrealism: An early 20 th century art movement influenced by the theories of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams. Surrealist works can have a realistic, though irrational style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies.

Examples of Surrealist Works

To Do Create an imaginary surrealist scene that has a clear foreground, middle ground and background. Use overlapping, placement, size and detail to create the illusion of depth. 1.Follow the directions and diagrams on the board to create four sketches in your visual journal. 2.Select your best or most interesting drawing and enlarge it on 16x20 paper with pencil.

Exit Ticket How did you create the illusion of depth in your drawing?

Thursday, 1/2 Objective: Explain how line and pattern can be used to create visual and simulated texture. Create five different kinds of visual texture using line and pattern. Notes Texture: the element of art that refers to how things feel or look as if they might feel if touched. Visual Texture: the illusion of texture on a surface. Simulated Textures: imitate real textures Invented Textures: two-dimensional patterns created by the repetition of lines and shapes to create decorated surfaces.

Thursday, 1/9 Objective: Explain how line, value, repetition and variation can be used to create visual texture. Re-create five different kinds of visual texture and then create five of your own using line, value, repetition and variation. Drill 1.The illusion of texture on a surface is called ____ texture. 2.Visual textures that imitate real textures are called ____. 3.What is the role of line in creating texture? 4.The element of value refers to ___ and ___. 5.What is the role of repetition in creating texture? 6.Explain how line, repetition, value and variation create the illusion of texture on the image on the right.

Creating texture Demonstration Using: a.Line b.Direction c.Repetition d.Variation Creating value

To Do Complete the second column of the texture handout by repeating each of the textures on the left column. Create five textures of your own. FILL EACH SQUARE ENTIRELY Pay attention to line, repetition, value and variety.

Exit Ticket What is the role of line, value, repetition and variety in creating visual textures?

Wednesday, 1/8 Objective: Apply simulated and invented textures to your surreal drawing in order to increase the sense of weirdness using ink pen. Drill 1.When creating a visual texture you need to use repetitive ____ or shapes. 2.To create a dark value at the same time as creating texture you can place your lines or shapes ____. 3.What repetitive elements can you identify in the drawing on the right that are used to create texture?

To Do Complete the drawing we started before break on a piece of paper.: - Your drawing needs to have a clear foreground, middle ground and background created through the use of placement, size and overlapping. - Your drawing needs to include elements that create a sense of weirdness in the style of Surrealism. Add invented and simulated textures to the objects in your drawing using a sharpie and/or oil pastels. - Use line repetitively. - Pay attention to the direction of the lines so that they follow the curve of the object. - Place lines closer together or farther apart to create variation in value.
