Line:A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin.

3. Space: An element of art, space refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

4. Shape: an enclosed space, the boundaries of which are defined by other elements of art (i.e.: lines, colors, values, textures, etc.). Shapes are limited to two dimensions: length and width.

5. Form: An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing.

6. Value: The lightness or darkness of tones or colors
Value: The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.

Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is added)
Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull)

10. Rhythm: A principle of design that indicates movement, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.

11. Balance: A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. Major types are symmetrical and asymmetrical.

12. Unity: the relationship among the elements of a visual that helps all the elements function together. Unity gives a sense of oneness to a visual image.

13. Pattern: an underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner. Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organizes the parts of a composition

14. Movement: A principle of design used to create the look and feeling of action and to guide the viewer’s eye throughout the work of art.

15. Contrast: the difference in two related elements such as color, shape, value, type, texture, alignment, direction and movement. The arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.

16. Emphasis: an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point.
