the Freedom Writer’s Diary The Line Game Adapted from the Freedom Writer’s Diary

Rules: Please be silent throughout the game. It’s okay to ask to have a question repeated. You do not have to cross the line to answer a question if you don’t want to. Please don’t “keep score” of who crosses. The point is to see how many people cross, not who crosses.

Walk to the line if... …you are wearing jeans today. …you are under 18 years old. …you feel stressed this week. …you've ever felt judged because of: your skin color (Racism) your gender (Sexism) your body (Ableism)

...you relate to the stories/film/performances? ...you’ve experienced oppression out in the world? ... experienced here at school? ... experienced it in your own home? …if you feel you can’t succeed ‘cause of the stereotypes that prevent you?

... you are guilty of oppressing others? ... you have wished that adults/teachers/parents would talk to you about issues related to oppression? ... you’ve seen your friend bully others? ...and did nothing about it? ‘cause you were scared your friend will judge you? ‘cause you’re scared you would be oppressed too? didn’t know how to stop?

...... you were afraid to go to school because you knew you would be bullied? ... you believe, deep in your heart, that we need to stop oppression by talking about it?

Additional Questions These questions were added by the actual Freedom Signers group in 2010

How many of you feel embarrassed about being the way you are How many of you feel embarrassed about being the way you are? (Being deaf, African American/Chinese/Hispanic, small/tall or even being freckled)

Did you ever try to fix yourself? Trying to be someone that you’re not?

How many of you feel like your family members ignore you and don’t include you in their conversations or don’t really tell you what they are talking about?

How many of you feel that the teachers in class aren’t really supporting you?
