Imaging Software: Norton Ghost Presented by: Paul Tsan Carlos Vasquez Steven Sanchez

Objectives:  What is Imaging Software?  Why use Imaging Software?  Symantec Ghost Server install  Image “Pulling”, Capturing an Image  Image Dumping, Ghosting an Image to a remote PC.  Other Imaging software

What is Imaging Software?  Drive Imaging not only backs up all the data on your PC, it allows you to quickly restore your PC to the state it was in when the backup was made.  Creating a Restore disk for your system, that provides a quick way to reinstall Windows and applications  Set up several identical PC's quickly by creating a disk image of the first system set up, which would the be used to install Windows and all the applications on the subsequent systems, saving the time to install Windows and the applications.

Why use Imaging Software?  Drive Imaging is a quicker solution is to deploy Windows, your latest hardware drivers, and applications, and configure the applications to save data to another partition.  Windows and applications reinstall time will be reduced by 75% or more, and the drivers and settings will be set correctly by your standard.

Why use Imaging Software? (cont.)  If you install and try lots of different software and hardware, or like to tweak your system, each change risks creating conflicts that might affect system performance.  If you have a Ghost image of your system, you have a quick, safe way to restore your system back to its original state before any changes.  Computer enthusiasts who frequently upgrade and modify their system will find Ghost a time saver.

Why use Imaging Software? (cont.)  In big corporations, where each PCs are mostly identical, you can install windows and all the application software on one system, and then create a disk image, which could then be copied to the other system.  Example places that would benefit from using a Imaging Software: –Schools –Libraries –Offices –Anywhere that uses multiple computers

Why use Imaging Software? (cont.)  Imaging a PC or Laptop is possible without a server. –Can be used with Peer-To-Peer Networks –Can be used in Windows or DOS networks  You can connect your laptop to a desktop computer by USB cable, network cable or parallel cable, and make a Ghost image of your laptop.

Symantec Ghost Server Install  Steps involved in the Configuration of the Symantec Ghost Server.

Client Install  There are several ways to install the client –Manually bring the CD to install at a PC –Using the Ghost Console to remote install –Or install through a network Active Directory/Group Policy Novell Servers  A Client must be installed in order for the Ghost Server Console to ‘see’ the client

Creating a Ghost Image  Naming, Selecting, and defining partitions on a computer to save as an image.  Steps involved in the Image creation process.

Client Action  On the client side –the pc will reboot –and start the imaging  Once the imaging is done –The PC will reboot –Back to original state

Small Video Clip of Client Side

Imaging a PC, Image “Ghosting”  Sending the image saved to a remote PC.  Process involved using Symantec Ghost  Can be used in multicast mode to image to several clients at once  Save lots of time configuring a PC for the entire company

Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition  Key Features –Streamlines the deployment and migration of operating systems, software updates, user profiles, and data to desktop and mobile assets –Hardware and software inventory data is now gathered from the Ghost Console, enabling administrators to design provisioning tasks based on specific client attributes

Key Features Cont.  Multicast File Transfer allows an administrator to send and execute individual files or critical security-related "hot fixes" to multiple recipients simultaneously  Provides the ability to back up and/or load Ghost images from a variety of media options including supported USB, Firewire, or recordable CD or DVD external drives and devices  Ghost Explorer –Used to open the ghost images much like using Windows Explorer to view a file.
