Herbert School Tell Them From Me Student Survey March 2015 We Asked, You Said Herbert School Tell Them From Me Student Survey March 2015

Thank you grade 4 to 12 students for completing the survey in December! Your feedback and input has been heard by teachers and administration at our school. We have responded to your input with the following ideas we will share with you in this presentation. Your feedback in this survey and at all times is important in helping us improve our school culture.

Grades 4-6 Feedback

We asked you to tell us some things you really liked about your experiences at our school. You said… “responsible, respectful, happy, exciting, and safe” "welcomed, safe, good , not scared, and not bullied" “Mathematics, experiments, gym, improvement, and Social Studies” "good, cool, fun, playful,nice" We say… We are happy that many of your expressed these great things about our school. Your teachers and administration work hard to ensure you have great learning experiences and that you have safe and enjoyable time at school.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “More clubs” “A few more clubs” We say we agree with you! Since the survey we have started the Lego and Looming Club, and a Peer Support Club. We also have phone ambassadors, Kindergarten helpers, crossing guards, a dance club, and morning announcer clubs for elementary students. We are also trying to get the Missoula Theatre Company back next year.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “I would like to be able to play basketball.” “Younger age groups for sport.” “I’d like to play some sports like badminton, and volley ball at school. We say that we agree with you! We have started gr. 4 to 6 elementary basketball intra-murals and a dance club at noon hours. We purchased brand new outdoor sports equipment for your classrooms at the start of the year. We are also looking at how we can improve the basketball nets on the tennis court so you can use them to play basketball at recess.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “At school I think we should have friendship club because you can get together and be a whole group of friends it could also be for people who don't have friends at school.” “Anti bullying day” We say it is very important to have positive relationships at school. We have started a peer support club for elementary students and our grade 9s will be doing anti-bullying presentations to elementary students. We are also participating in Pink Day/Anti-Bullying Day on April 1st. We have started a peer support club for our middle years and high school students too.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said….. “We need more benches.” We say that we agree with you! Our school has purchased a new table for students in the main entrance, fixed up the benches in the main entrance, and our building some new benches this year that we hope to put in the elementary side of the school.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “We need a better lunch and breakfast program.” We say that it is important to have a healthy breakfast and lunch to be successful learners at school. We started the breakfast program this year and are trying new options for students such as fruit, yogurt, and granola bars in addition to toast and milk. We are working with our school community council parents in trying to improve our lunch program to continue improving our lunch program too. We have also installed two brand new water fountains that provide cool, fresh water for students.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said that we need… “more internet things” “ipad club and bring ipad that is yours” We say that technology is very important and we are working hard to improve technology at our school. We will be getting some technology upgrades this March and improved wi-fi for students. We will also continue to upgrade our technology for students as our budget permits.

Grades 7-12

We asked you to tell us some things you really liked about your experiences at our school. You said… “its a good learning environment.” “clean place, good teachers, good equipment” “It's a good small school with not many students, it offers good extra activities for after school.” “The teachers and the classes I'm taking are some of the things I really like in my school.” “I like how all the teachers are easy to get along with and you can talk to any of them without feeling scared, I like how It a welcoming environment.”

We asked you to tell us some things you really liked about your experiences at our school. You said… “The teachers and the classes I'm taking are some of the things I really like in my school.” “Small classes, teachers who care, help when you need it, personalized learning” “I know most of the students that attend this school. It's small and easy to work around in.” “I like that there are people that will listen to you when you need someone to talk to.” “I like how close knit and "Family like" our school is, everybody knows everybody so you don't feel excluded very often.” “I like how the teachers do their best to help the students.”

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “I would like to see more school clubs such as band and drama. I would also like to see an art program for students in grades 10-12.” We say that we have heard you and have started a drama club since the survey was completed. We are also looking at bringing back the Missoula Theatre Company for 2015/2016!

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “Some things i suggest that would make my school better is for more activities to get the students involved.” We say that we agree it is important to have many activities for students to choose from at school. Besides the Drama Club, we have started a Peer Support Club, Chess Club, and a Robotics Club for students since you completed the survey.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said…. “I would also really love to see a Junior and/or Senior boys Soccer, to widen our sport options.” We say that physical fitness is very important and we are trying to offer more sports. Since the survey, we have started a girls rugby program in partnership with Swift Current Comp and the girls will play games this spring. If there is enough interest, we would certainly consider a boys soccer team in the future. Please see Mr. Kohlman if you want a boys soccer team.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said…. “More dances would be nice.” We say we that we heard you! We appreciate how the students enjoy school dances and that you would like more dances. Since the survey we had another dance and hopefully the SRC can plan another dance this spring.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “One thing that would make Herbert School better is if the internet speed was faster. “More computers.” We say that we have heard you! Our school is due for a technology upgrade later in March and we will have wi-fi for students after this updgrade. We are also looking at how we can improve technology at our school and purchase new technology as our budgets permit.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “We need new paint brushes.” We say we definitely heard you! Since the survey was completed we ordered approximately $2000.00 in new art supplies such as paints, paint brushes, and paper.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “More tables in the back for the high school kids would be nice to work on.” We say that we are happy you would like more tables to work on. Since the survey, we purchased a new table for students to sit at and do work. We put the table in our main foyer. We also fixed up the benches in the foyer with new upholstery and we are going to put more benches in the school. This spring, we are also going to build some tables and benches for students to use outside.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “I think our school would be better if there were more things than just basketball going on at lunch.” We say that we agree with you. Since the survey, we have purchased a new ping pong table for students and it is located on the stage for students to use during noon hour. The ping pong table along with the new clubs are available for students at noon hour.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “More field trips would be nice. Haven’t went on a field trip for a couple of years.” We say we have heard you. Your teachers look for field trips that align with the topics of your classes. We are continually looking at field trip options for students. This year we have sent students to Me to We in Saskatoon, Regina for a Shakespeare play, and we are sending the History 20 students to Moose Jaw.

We asked you to tell us some things that would make our school even better. You said… “We should do more things like toonie Tuesday, and get more foods for the breakfast program we have.” We say that we agree it is important to have healthy foods for breakfast and lunch. Since the survey we have added more options such as yogurt and fruit for the breakfast program. We will work with our school community council parents to improve our lunch program. Please see Mr. Kohlman if you have ideas for menu items we should sell at lunch.
