“Mona Lisa” Art Masterpiece 5th Grade Leonardo Da Vinci “Mona Lisa” Art Masterpiece 5th Grade

Leonardo Da Vinci Born in 1452 in Italy. He was very curious and asked lots of questions. He was very smart – way ahead of his time and some people thought he was strange. He was popular and royalty would hire him to paint for them. Much of his artwork has been ruined including all of his sculptures (there were many of them).

He was also a scientist and an inventor! He often traveled from France to Italy to work for royalty. Whenever he traveled, he would only carry his notebooks and his painting of the Mona Lisa. Why do you think he always carried this painting with him? Why do you think he traveled his whole life? He was also a scientist and an inventor!

Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings have inspired artists and engineers for centuries. What kinds of machines do you think his sketches helped to invent?

The Last Supper by Da Vinci This painting is 15 feet tall and 29 feet long. It is located in Italy.

Mona Lisa Maybe the most recognized work in history. No one knows for sure who she was. Why do you think she is half smiling?

Vocabulary Words Portrait: A painting or sketch of a person. Texture: How something feels, Da Vinci uses color to achieve this on Mona Lisa’s sleeves. Proportion: Facial features are correct size and appear realistic.

Your turn to sketch a Portrait! Use a mirror to measure where your eyes, mouth, nose, ears and eyebrows are! You might be surprised. 

Remember to sketch lightly so you can erase later! Draw another line half way between the eyes and the chin. This is where your nose ends. The nose is bigger than you think! Draw another line half way between the nose and the chin. This is where the mouth goes.

The nose is as wide as in between your two eyes The nose is as wide as in between your two eyes. The mouth is as wide as the center of the two eyes.

Add eyebrows and begin erasing your extra lines. The neck needs to be big enough to hold up your head!

Be sure to sign your portrait when you are finished Be sure to sign your portrait when you are finished! If you want to color it with colored pencils, you can but you don’t have to color it in.
