9 Cubism Cubism is an artistic style that was created and practiced by four major artists during the twentieth-century ( ). These four artists are Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger. Picasso and Braque were inspired by African tribal sculptures and masks. Cubism is when an artist abstracts the image being portrayed into a multitude of broken cube-like pieces. An abstract artwork does not attempt to represent external, recognizable reality but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
