Education in China comprises 2 parts Basic education and Higher education

Copyright ©2006 NENU basic education pre-school education elementary education general secondary education junior middle schoool education senior high school education

Copyright ©2006 NENU  Pre-school education usually covers a period of three years starting from 5 years old. Playing games is the central activity, which is a combination of education and conservation and mainly introduces kids to a school-like or classroom- like environment.

Copyright ©2006 NENU Elemantary education Most children go to elementary school at the age of eight and it lasts six years. During elementary stage, math and Chinese are the most important with some other subjects, such as science, PE, music and art.

Copyright ©2006 NENU JMS includes a period of three years. In addition to Chinese, math and English, students have history, geography, physics, biology and chemistry.

Copyright ©2006 NENU  In China, it is also called “ nine-year free compulsory education” which includes schooling from elementary school education to junior middle school education.  Three characteristics of compulsory education compulsion: must and should public welfare: two exemptions and one supplement popularity: high enrollment Compulsory Education

Copyright ©2006 NENU Teaching Philosophy  We guide and push students to get and know out of classroom what they are supposed to get and know, namely, ”whats”.  We try hard to inspire a sense of wonderment in the world around us, namely, ”whys”.  We try harder to encourage students to solve problems using these basic scholastic knowledge and develop kind of critical thinking by setting up certain learning workshops, namely, ”hows”.

Copyright ©2006 NENU Curriculum  Chinese teachers are expected to follow a national curriculum.  Chinese students are expected to master a body of knowledge by demonstrating on exams some familiarity with these facts, terms, and concepts studied in the course.

Copyright ©2006 NENU Development and Achievement  Since 1986 when China started to carry out nine-year compulsory education, it has made an astonished achievement by popularizing the compulsory education during the past 30 years.  By 2008, most students in both rural and urban areas can enjoy free compulsory education.

Copyright ©2006 NENU Twelve-year compulsory education  “Twelve-year compulsory education” was proposed , which claimed that senior high school education or pre-school education should be included in the compulsory education. Now, some developed coastal areas has began to try out twelve-year compulsory education in China, but it has not been popularized widely yet.

Copyright ©2006 NENU SHS can be classified into public high schools, nongovernmental senior high schools, and technical schools.

Copyright ©2006 NENU In public senior high schools, which covers 3 years, students take Chinese, math, English, history, geography, physics, biology, chemistry, PE, drawing and music. Teaching materials can be classified into required courses and elective courses and students can be divided into liberal arts and science students. There are examinations every other month. And in the 6th semester, students can choose to take the well-known national college entrance examination (NCEE), and the marks from NCEE will decide which university students are allowed to enter. There is a hierarchy among these courses. Those to be tested in NCEE belong to the first rank, with the others the secondary.

Copyright ©2006 NENU  The pinnacle of SHS is to prepare students for NCEE.  Such system is based on linearity.  Our central government has tried a lot to reform this situation, but so far, the outcome is limited.
